Tannerite & the lil cartridges...

curious what you guys have used with good effect, for minimum cartridges on this stuff ???

I shot one ( maybe not a good hit ) with a 22 Hornet, & it didn't go off ( my buddy & I were taking turns, & his 220 swift certainly "lit up" the canister

the other day, I shot one with my 17 Fireball ( way less than a 40 grain bullets, but at close to 4,000 fps... & that certainly "lit it off"...

got me thinking if a 17 HMR or my other 17 Mach 2 might do the job??? anyone tried...

how about handgun calibers ???

Don't know the answer to your question, but I like your signature line.

I think a better one, however, might be "In life, you either make dust, eat dust, or become dust."

No handgun cartridge I've ever tried has set off tannerite.

I've heard you need something in the 2000 fps+ velocity range to set it off. I know my 30-30 and .32 Win Special will light it up.

We all become dust, by the way.

Thanks for the replys guys...

maybe I'll have to try my 17 Mach 2...

just think the "effect" will be more impressive if the report of the gun is less, but the tannerite still lights off like it's supposed to

anyone tried those binary rim fire targets ???

BTW... I'm not huge in to "sploding" targets, but it does keep grandkids interested

If a .22 Hornet doesn't set it off, I doubt that a .17 HMR will set it off. The .22 Hornet has both a heavier bullet and a slightly higher muzzle velocity than the .17 HMR.
You might try 35 grain bullets with max loads of Hodgon's L'il Gun powder in the Hornet for maximum .22 Hornet velocity. I think high velocity is important to initiate detonation of Tannerite, which explains why the centerfire .17 moving along at 4000 fps sets it off.

yeh... might have to try the Hornet again... the one shot I fired at one, I had it ( the jar of tanerite ) set on a 55 gallon steel barrel, upside down, & I hit too low, & went through the rim of the drum, & into the very bottom of the jar... we just flipped the jar, & the next shot was my buddys 220 swift, & that took car of it, so I didn't get a 2nd shot with the Hornet... I'd think if I got a good solid hit with the Hornet it would light one off ???

Supposedly you need 2000fps but I don't know if they say anything about bullet size or mass. I would think this would be a classic example of 'energy' (combination of both mass and velocity).

I know 30-30 bullets set it off no problem. :D

Next time I'm curious to see if the 22 magnum could do it. The Super-X tip in just barely at 2000fps (and 40gr). I'd hate to just splatter a can of tannerite all over the hill though and not get a report ... that would be a bummer.

BTW - I actually thought the report from the 30-30 was quite impressive. BOOM from the 30-30, followed by a BOOM from the tannerite, followed by BOOm BOom Boom boom from the echo across the lake. I have to admit, it was good fun. :)

I set off a canister of tannerite using a .222. The report was so loud I had a neighbor come over and ask if everyone was alright.

I have not used it again because of the report. I do not like to bother my neighbors, or at least most of them. I wrote the company to ask if I could mix the powders and put them in smaller containers and never got a reply back. (I was thinking the smaller medicine bottles.)

As far as using a handgun to set the stuff off, I do not want to be that close to it when it explodes. So I am tagging this to see what else you guys have used.
