Are tannerite rifle targets legal in Oklahoma???
The website says they are but I wanna make sure before ordering any.

Thanks.
Michael.

Check your state laws on transporting destructive devices and expolosives if you want to know for sure.

www.tannerite.com is the place to buy them and Dan Tanner (who I have on speed dial on my cell phone - just in case) claims it is legal in all 50 states.

The're a real blast! :D

Probably legal

But unless you have had a lot more rain than the rest of us it is probably NOT a good idea

Thanks all.

We have not had any rain for a long time so these will be a "winter with snow on the ground item"

Thanks again.
Michael.

As i understand ATF law on explosive devices, if you make them yourself, for your own personal use, they are legal to trasnport and use. However you may have more restrictive local ar/or state laws.

I'm expecting the monitors to lock this one down quick!

Picture above shows a Federal Crime!
FBI will be on you like..... well you know.

blume - Is it a federal crime for me to go to Wal Mart, buy a mailbox and cut it into pieces with a pair of tinsnips? Why would it be a crime to blow it up with Tannerite? Give me a break...

Dave Haven - You should see what I did to a junked Mercury Sable a couple years ago... :D

Sorry SW; t'ain't so.

The only reason Tannerite is legal is because it's a binary explosive. Two parts must be mixed before it becomes an explosive. The component parts by themselves are harmless and perfectly legal.

This is the reason that some telephone and power company trucks can carry a binary explosive called a Kinepak, which is a very powerful explosive when mixed, without displaying the "Explosives A" sign and without an escort through populated areas.

It is a federal crime to blow up a mail box.

Trust me, I know. Yes, it's probably not to do it in your back yard but if it's out by the road on a post... even if it's yours... the man might come a calling. If it's somebody elses.... you betcha. But, I was just pickin' a 'little' bit.

IIRC

Tannerite is AN + dark aluminum flake...
Kinepak is Nitro-methane and AN...

Buddy of mine used to run a powder company.

There are limits as to how much AN you can purchase at one time...

No. You don't.

It is completely legal as long as the mail box is not in use or intended for use. Only when it is used for receiving or delivering mail is it considered federal property.

TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 83 > § 1705

§ 1705. Destruction of letter boxes or mail

Whoever willfully or maliciously injures, tears down or destroys any letter box or other receptacle intended or used for the receipt or delivery of mail on any mail route, or breaks open the same or willfully or maliciously injures, defaces or destroys any mail deposited therein, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

Exactly!
As far as that goes, the local mail carriers (with the exception that the damage was caused by inattention or piss-poor driving skills) have committed numerous federal crimes in the damage they caused to that mailbox I blew up. I even complained to USPS. Was the matter resolved? Hell, no!

Funny how Blues Man and I get into a contest

and he quotes only the first part of my "I Know" not the second... because we actually agree on it...but anyway..... It's probably not nearly as big a deal now as it was 30+ years ago... The FBI probably has more important things to do than check up on kids blowing up mailboxes.

Speaking of 'postal workers' few years ago my sister in law who lives in D.C. didn't get her mail for a week. Finally found out the person delivering the mail was scarred of her neighbors dog and decided just to not deliver the mail on tha block anymore....

As for the tanerite.... it's not an explosive until it is mixed, so that's how they 'get away with it'. The key to when and where it is legal is up to you once you've mixed the stuff. Just as with gun laws, that is probably a quagmire depending on the state you are in. Couple college guys got arrested two years ago near here for Alkaselzer and someother stuff in 2 lt coke bottles an then sealing it and letting them blow up. Just a loud boom from the pressure! Homeland security doesn't like loud booms.

Without going into the exact recipes(google it yourself), some of the "Bottle Bombs" involve the use of strong acids that are indeed a danger to those nearby.

If it was just Alkaseltzer and water I would be interested in the charges. "Disturbing the peace" or public nuisance ordanance of some type?

Getting off the subject of Tannerite just long enough to post a warning. I participated in a tele-seminar on explosives awareness a few years back. It was taught by the Knoxville PD Bomb Squad, and they rated these "bottle bombs" as among the most dangerous of devices. They said they deal with all sort of sophisticated and powerful devices, but they won't even go near one of those.
