Talk to me about the .308 Ackley Improved

A guy has a nice rifle for sale locally in .308 Ackley Improved. I can't see that being much of a step up from regular .308 Win. Comments? FPS? Thanks.

I have an article from '96 about the Ackley Improveds. I'll see if I can remember to look up what it said about the .308 Improved tonight. If I recall correctly, I think the big improvement was case life, but I'll check. Also, if you want to search for Sensop on TFL (I think his email changed), he knows a lot about the AI's.

Personally, I'm gonna have George Stringer build me a "Cub Scout" in .250/3000 Ackley Improved.

Since you can shoot factory ammo, thereby fire-forming cases; and neck-size for reloading--hey, I sure wouldn't be afraid of it!

Lemme say this about that: I don't think I'd go to the trouble to Ackley-ize a .308, but I would be quite content with one if the price were equal to or a bit less than the same rifle, unmodified.

FWIW, Art

Thank you very much Spectre, but you give me too much credit. I agree with Art. There is little to gain from it, as a project. Ackley doesn't even discuss it in his two volumes of the Handbook For Shooters & Reloaders. However, if I came across a .308 already rechambered in the AI config and it was done correctly, I'd be mighty tempted.

I have a little .30-'30 single shot in AI and I have two points of impact at 100 yds: one with standard ammo and one with the AI ammo. In the .30-'30 the difference is significant, though.

The article ('96 Gun Digest Annual) had little to say about it. Sorry, but it would appear that it was unsignificant.

From what I can find out, the 308 is sort of an improved cartridge already. Ackley lessens the case taper and steepens the shoulder angle to 40*. The standard 308 doesn't have a lot of taper and the shoulder angle is about 25* already. There is not a lot of room to "improve" it. :)

On the smaller calibers based on the 308 case (243,7mm-08) improving makes a noticable difference.
