Talk me out of buying a Mini Draco (AK Pistol)

I keep seeing this Mini Draco for $745 on Southern Ohio Gun and every time I look at the ad I want the gun even more. Something about a backpack sized AK is just so tantalizing. Some of you might consider that garish, and it is, but there's no denying that it offers something really unique, and it just seems like it would be so fun to shoot. I already have an old school Norinco SKS so there's plenty of 7.62 x 39 lying around the house and while I really don't need to spend $800 on an AK pistol right now, it does seem like a good value for what it is.

For the sake of my bank account, please talk me out of it.

Get it.
I got my Draco in 2008. Worth less IMHO as a anything but a Fun Play gun. Mine is a 11" Romey. Prices vary from $500 on up. You should get a 7.5" from J&G Guns. http://www.jgsales.com/handguns-c-16_1015.html
Then you need to sink $150 into a easy to install CAI Arm Stabilizer,,,there you go. If I did it again I would get the least expensive with the shortest barrel. It is a fun little heavy gun and the brace makes it useable. (No SBR permit required and yes it can be shot from the cheak with ATF's approval.)

Here is a thread on one already..

There are better quality pistols made in that price range. But, I'd say "get it"! I sincerely doubt that you will be able to buy Draco pistols forever. Right now, they are cheap and available. Get it and enjoy it.

You guys aren't making this any easier

You're on the wrong forum for that. :)

I don't know about the Draco, but my PAP M92 is a hoot to shoot. It's the most accurate of my three 7.62x39 mm guns from the bench (under 3 MOA with Golden Tiger). It's surprisingly soft shooting. I'm not into arm braces, but off-hand is easy with a sling or not.

I'd say buy it.

@Dain Bramage

When you say that you consider the AK pistol style firearm to be soft shooting in your experience I wonder about your build. I have a sort of slight, rangy build (about 175 and 6'2"). I am decent and controlling firearms and find the recoil on some calibers, such as the .40, to be overrated, but in my experience shooting with SKS and AKM rifles shooting mostly milsurp ammo I've found the 7.62 to be a fairly snappy little cartridge. After about 300 rounds I was definitely starting to feel it a little.

OK.

You want an AK, get an AK. If you want a small AK, put a folding stock on one. Without a shoulder stock, these are mostly a noise maker.

The M92 is a similar AK pistol with a little more barrel length.

Also, word on the street is that full size Draco pistols are going to be making a comeback.

I'll try

The AK/AR pistol family is one for which I can find no use. Somebody posted noise maker and I'll agree.

Too big to conceal (c'mon, be real) and w/ no stock, you will not shoot it as well as an AK that has one. You could just about fund a genuine AK clone, with folding stock and SBR stamp for that, and have a far more useful firearm.

Ah but not every State in the Union allows you to own SBR or even get a stamp. As I said before get the CAI Arm Brace for $140. Easy to install and makes the pistol a useable fun gun.

I wonder about your build

Let's just say I'm huge.

Maybe it's something about not having the recoil come straight back to your shoulder. Also, the M92 is no lightweight, and it slows a lot of recoil with inertia.

I have an AMD-65 clone, and with a wire stock it is a lot less comfortable to shoot. It's also less accurate than this particular PAP from the bench. I guess the next step is to do an offhand challenge between the two.

The Draco is a neat little gun but I think you can find a far better deal. Atlantic Firearms, for instance, has them on sale right now for $499. I'd say in today's market, that's a good price. If you want to make the pistol far more useful, consider investing in the Sig Brace gear. It's a folder, I believe, keeping intact its utility as a backpack gun but practical for operating stout x39s from the shoulder. As another poster has said, it is legal per the ATF to do so. I have seen some of the PAP setups on Youtube and they seem to be about as popular as the AR-15 rigs. I'm halfway done with my AR build with this intention. I think the ATF ruling has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for intermediate rifle pistols, making them far more practical. Good luck!

You should definitely buy an AK pistol. Maybe no that deal.... But yeah get one.

I got a PAP M85NP in April and its pretty much awesome. Loads of fun and tons of room to do modifications to it.

Why would anybody want to?..................I don't mean buy one, I mean talk you out of it!
Just look around first for the best deal you can get. Like a lot, but not all of my "just for S's & G's" guns I had the urge to have one, but really not the need, so I waited until I found it at the right price.

What lee n. field said. I was actually paid to carry a gun for a very long time, first in the military and later in LE. I have never been in, seen or heard of a situation where a giant rifle-like semi-auto pistol would have been of any advantage whatsoever. if you want a compact rifle, many are available. If you want a pistol, many accurate, reliable examples, that were actually designed to be pistols, are available.

I mean no offense, but I consider these rifle-like semi-auto "pistols" to be in the catagory as fantasy knives...ymmv

Ps, if people want them for no practical use, but just because they find them fun to shoot. Have at it;-)

Most of the gun owners in this country dont have the ability or desire to go thru the hassle of obtaining a SBR. Legal restrictions, additional fees and paperwork, or just the lack of desire to jump thru the hoops keep alot of folks away from NFA weapons.

So a legal "pistol" with SBR like performance fills that role. As a Mil/LE type i have used PLENTY of shorter barreled versions of full-sized rifles to good "advantage".

As a purely anti-people gun, these have advantages.
