Taking suggestions on which shotgun to buy

This will not be used for any type of hunting, but just HD. Due to reputation, I'm leaning heavily toward Mossberg. I am considering model number 50668 which is their 590 Special Purpose 9 Shot, 12 gauge, 20" barrel, matte blue finish, synthetic speedfeed stock, with ghost ring sights.

Any reason I should choose something different? I realize there are shotguns such as the Pardner or Remington which may be just as capable for less money, especially considering how little use this gun will actually see, but I do not want to skimp to save a few dollars and then end up regretting doing so.

Thank you

I do not believe the the 870 Wingmaster is less expensive than the Mossberg -and its reputation is rock-solid

I'm sure I'll want an attached light at a minimum.

Why are you sure about that? Most folks typically hunker-down in their bedroom dialing 911 while pointing the muzzle at the door. Unless you have kids in another area of the house, "sweeping" the place for intruders is a bad idea

off the top of my head...

Let's see about lighting: You can get a new EOTech LED Fore-end light for $269.00 and hope you'll never have to use it. Or, for about the same $$$ you can get a Z-wave wireless lighting control system for your home and enjoy it every day.

You did pretty good

I have a Mossberg 930 SPX, and I love it. But I do want to add a pump and actually twice I have been at the point of no return in the store and once bought something different, and the other time they said "Oh its MLK day, no NICS" and I was like, ***?! And the next day I had to spend all my money on an "emergency" so I couldn't go back to get it. (Once was a M590A1 once was a Benelli Supernova Tactical).

Other than the Benelli Supernova Tactical there is no shotgun I'd rather have than the M590A1. Ideally I'd get the 18.5" SNT and the 20" Heavy walled barrel 590A1.

You look like you are picking one of if not the one I almost have bought. you did good bro.

Purchased it today

I went with the 590A1 Special Purpose 51668. $505.

Although it may be a trivial item, any suggestions for a simple strap?

Unless there is more than 1 person.

I think you made a good choice. I would ditch the sling for a HD SG, just something to hang up on in a house.

Not really..a sling is very useful. What if you need both hands to do something yet you don't want to set it down. Or opening a locked door. Know what I mean?

Agree. My preference for a HD shotgun is the less doo-dads the better.

Slings catch on things...slings can be used to take your weapon away from you...slings are for hunting firearms.

Also, another personal preference of mine on a HD shotgun is a bead sight , none at all or night sights. In low-light conditions, you'll most likely not be seeing/using the sights anyways. Especially ghost ring sights.

Suggestion, buy many, many boxes of what your going to shoot and try to wear that new Mossy out. Practice many rounds of rapid fire double/triple tapping. Helps to eliminate short stroking under a stressful situation. Buy some dummy rounds mix em in with live rounds and practice rapidly clearing your shotgun in a misfire situation.
Then think, re-think and think some more about a game plan, running a 'bump in the night' scenario through your head and your reactions till your reactions will be second nature.

Do these things and you'll be much further ahead of the game then worrying about what to add to an already well equipped shotgun.

Welcome to TFL and....Congrats on your new purchase.

If your using it for home defense...

-Mossberg 590 or 590A1 with beads
-Keep the gun stock (flashlight is O.K. as long as you know WHEN to use it)
-Load 2 3/4" or 3" 00 buck
-Create a plan for defending your home (people dont always come through the front door)
-Practice
