Taking dents out of a stock?

OK, this is my fault. I left my rifle on the bench without covering it and a guy with an AR sat down to the left of me while I was going to get a soft drink. So it now has three little dents in the stock from flying .223 shell cases.

How to get these dents out? I've heard that a moist rag and a hot iron will make them rise, but is this true?

I've removed minor dings from wood furniture with the moisture method. Don't know if it works as well on stocks.

Yes, that is true. So long as the grain isn't 'broken'. if it's just dented they should come out OK.

Use your soldering iron to get precise heating. If the stock has a heavy laquer or poly coating it will not work, you will only yellow the laquer. If it has the heavy coating you can take a VERY small hypodermic needle and inject a SMALL quantity of water into the wood before heating. Clear nail polish or laquer will seal the hole when you are done and you will be hard pressed to find the blemish if you rub it out with rubbing compound. Vetrinarians are a good source of needles if you explain what you are using it for.

I thought to revisit this thread.

I never did find a soldering iron (whenever I solder I use a torch), instead used the tip of the clothes iron. Used a tiny needle to put a little bit of water in the dings. They raised about 95 %. A little tung oil and the problem is over.
