Taepodong-2 Missile and .50 Caliber Barrett

This one is good for a few chuckles..:)

Sabotage potential
We have no evidence that the U.S. was able to sabotage North Korea's Taepodong-2 missile, which malfunctioned 42 seconds into launch on Tuesday and crashed.
But we do note that special operations forces (SOF) are playing an increasing role, overt and covert, in the world under Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld's rule. We also note that one of the reasons that SOF procured the powerful .50- caliber Barrett's sniper rifle was to have the capability to disable ballistic missiles. It's a scenario for missile defense you won't see in any literature from the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency: insert a commando behind the lines, who positions himself within shooting range of the launchpad.
"One of the original reasons for procuring the .50-caliber sniper system was to disable missiles," a SOF source says. "A round pumped in prior to launch, or during to cover the noise, in the right place would cause a catastrophic malfunction."

I think it was Susan Storm, the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four that did it. I guess beer or weed was available in the editorial offices at writing time.

Well. . . is it impossible? If you can ground an airplane or a helicopter, why not a missile?

Unlikely, certainly. Heck of a shot if he did it during the launch, I would think, though who knows? I've never seen one of these take off. If he did it before, I'd be surprised if they launched after hearing a .50 report.

BOOM!
Twing!
"What was that, Kim?"
"I dunno, Kim. Let's just get the pre-flight done."
"Hey, Park, did you hear something strange?"
"WHAT?"
"I SAID, DID YOU HEAR SOMETHING?"
"LET'S JUST FINISH THE PRE-FLIGHT! IS THAT FUEL SHOOTING OUT THE SIDE OF THE ROCKET?"
"CAN'T BE! WE ALREADY INSPECTED THAT PART! I THINK WE'RE GOOD TO GO!"

:D

Fun stuff, Don!

I wonder why a .308 wouldn't work just as well. Missiles are very fragile.

Oh.....because it's impractical to expect to get an American sniper close to the launch complex. If that was the case, why not just take out the "dear leader" and call it a day?

And not to be a fun-hater, but it'd really sound like "Twing................................................................BOOM" :D

Who wants to place bets on how long it's going to take the Brady Trash to quote some of these road apples in their anti-.50 cal propaganda?:D

I've worked in Korea - and given the general quality of workmanship I've observed there you wouldn't need a 50 caliber to shoot down one of their missiles. A sling shot would do the job just fine.

DPRNK is about as un-meltingpot as it goes. Plus Kim would definately freak if US soldiers (or agents, whatever), were found. If this type of thing was attempted, you could probably do it with a 9mm. But I'd rather do it from 50bmg distances.

There is tech data that shows the proper place to shoot certain equipment with a .50 to disable it.

Technically, you could bring down a missile with a .22, but it would have to be a really, really, really lucky shot and you would have to get it at just the right moment.

Wait...sorry. I was having a GK moment.

Huh?

Heist, where did you find that? It sounds like a political speech by Kerry or one of his accomplices attempting to sound smart!  :barf:

The funny thing is that if you listen carefully and actually do understand the math involved in error correction, guidance and position calculation, it really does make some sense. It's just done up in bureaucratic doublespeak and highly talented obfuscation!

I'm not quite as sure as everyone else is that a .50 BMG could be counted on to destroy an ICBM during lift phase. There are a lot of areas on the missle that would absorb a .50 BMG without incident. The target is still moving, at an ever-increasing rate, and you won't be a couple of hundred yards away. I wouldn't want to stake a couple of million people's lives on a 662 grain bullet vs. an ICBM.

Maybe a terra-watt laser, but not a .50 BMG from a Barrett. If I'm going to try to take out the thing during lift-phase, an M2HB would be a better choice. :)

As the Mythbusters would say: Plausible.

Wait until the engines have fired, then fire as many rounds as you can into it (It's a big, slow moving target for several seconds.) To keep weight down there are not that many "non-vital" parts, so there's a good chance of a damaging shot.

Possible, but IMHO unlikely.
