Tactics question

Hey all I am new to the site and looking forward to learning and gaining incite. I am working for NCPD and looking to try out for SWAT. I am left eye dominant but shoot my service pistol right handed since this is my strong side. I will have to shoot myAR left handed. So how is this tactically speaking. Is it similar to operating both weapon systems on the same side. And how are transitions made? Thanks for advice.

Take a small piece of scotch tape and put it on your shooting glasses right over the spot on the glasses where your eyes would be looking through if you're lining up the rifle on your right hand. You said you were right handed but left eye dominant right?

What this does is when actually looking around your eyes will be able to focus around the small piece of scotch tape and you won't have too much distortion in your vision but when you're shouldering a rifle to shoot you won't be able to focus on the sights with your dominant eye which then forces your right eye (non-dominant one but the one that's in line) to focus on the sights. Train this way and in time you'll be able to shoot long guns with your right eye while you can still shoot handguns using your dominant eye.

That little bit of information was shared with me by a long time shooting instructor.

Your transition ought to be smooth as glass. As you lower your carbine/rifle with your left hand, your right hand ought to have sidearm in it before your rifle quits moving- depending on the type of sling system you use.

What would be the chances of learning to be proficient with shooting your pistol left handed? The reason I ask is, lets say you're moving a stack down a hallway or any forward dynamic movement/formation- it's more difficult for a righty to cover to the right, where it would be natural for a lefty.

I hope your instructors have the insight to explore your situation to see it and shape it into a benefit instead of a mental roadblock. However, each dept is unique in it's training approach, and I hate to see you get too much counter intuitive info/habits here on the interwebs.

As for prepping- try to get as much productive range time in as possible, and learn as much as you can about basic formations and hand/arm signals.

There are left-handed AR-15s available. If you make the SWAT team, do you have to use what they have, or can you equip yourself with a southpaw carbine?
