tactical shotgun

The Mossberg 500 is very modifiable and semi-cheap. The quality is decent in my opinion but doesn't come close to my Winchester Model 12 (which isn't anything special to begin with.

The Remington 870 is also another great option, but I've never changed one around. Or owned one for that matter.

For me, the 870 is the only real choice. The 590 is a viable choice for many, but they simply dont do it for me. I dislike the ergonomics, and the build quality is not up to that of the Remington. The 1300 Winchester/FN Police is not a sturdily enough built gun for hard use, although the Speed Pump system is intriguing. The Nova is an intriguing platform, but it is not easily modified to the individual user.

When it comes down to it, my choice is the 870, or the 500/590 in a pinch. Yes, I own both.

I just ordered an 18" barrel for my old 870, I'm going to convert it into a home defense weapon since I now use an 835 ulti mag to turkey hunt. Can anyone recommend a good magazine extension?

The extension issue has been hashed, and rehashed many, many times. The general consensus, and one with which I agree, is that the best extension is the factory Remington piece, or the Tank's Rifle Shop version thereof. Hans Vang makes an extension, but I have not handled one. I am confident it is of the utmost quality, given the rest of his product line.

After those, the remainder fall. Wilson, TacStar, and Choate all make extensions that I consider sub par. They are not good quality parts when compared to those mentioned above. the glaring exception is Wilson's' +1 extension, which is a nice piece. Their +2 is not up to snuff, in my opinion. This being said, these tubes will generally work and function for the most part. However, the added cost of the quality units is money well spent.

ATI builds what they call an extension tube, but, like the rest of their stuff, it is junk at best.

Whatever you get, make sure and get a magazine clamp, it is essential.

Any reliable repeating shotgun has merit for defense. The crucial part is not the hardware, but us.

Get a shotgun and shoot it until it feels like a body part. At that point, you'll possess a fine tactical shotgun....

This is what works for me. Rem.870 12ga.3''mag, 20'' rifled slug barrell, Rem. mag extention and barrell clamp and Tru-Glo sights.

Rem 870 Police

I really like my 870 Police. It came with a pistol grip collapsible stock which looks very similar to the telestock on an AR, but it has a recoil reducing spring in it and a very good pad both of which help tame the recoil. It also has adjustable rifle sights which are great when using slugs. It came with sling swivels also, but does not have the mag extension as standard on it, which I did think was odd, especially on a "Police" model, but that's a minor gripe to me. The telestock gives you a small package and easy handlig in tight spaces, while keeping the control you would not have if it were a "cruiser" with only a pistol grip but no stock.

I bought a Remington 870 with composite stock, 18" barrel, and Remington magazine extension. I then changed the barrel for a 20" Improved Cylinder barrel with rifle sights. I added a Knoxx Spec Ops stock, a Choate forend with short picatinny rail to which I attached a Surefire G2 flashlight mounted in an old scope ring. To top it all off I added a sling adapter and a Knoxx Mission Ready tactical sling. I received another 870 Express with Remchoke barrel for Christmas. I put the 18" barrel on it when it is stashed away in the bedroom, and change it to the vent rib Remchoke barrel when I go hunting, or shooting clays. Total investment in the tactical rig: about $600.00, but it is a thing of beauty.

I recently took a basic defensive shotgun course at Tac Pro Shooting Center with the tactical rig. Fired about 500 rounds over the course of three days. The Knoxx Spec Ops was worth the hundred or so bucks. The Remington extension tube was totally reliable, as was the entire rig. For defensive purposes, I have to vote for the pump. Even the best autos can be tempermental and picky about ammo. The pump will digest just about anything, very rarely malfunctions, and when it does it can almost always be cleared by holding the gun by the slide and giving it a sharp rap on the ground. In tactical operations such as rapid ammo change, for example changing from a buckshot to a slug, the pump is superior to the auto. The pump can actually be fired faster than an auto in a load one, shoot one (load 2 shoot 2 for an auto) situation. For purely defensive applications, in my never to be humble opinion, the pump is the better choice. Whether you pick the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 500 these things are extremely durable and will go bang everytime you pull the trigger.

870 express mag

i actually bought a 870 express mag today with a mag extension. it has the 18" cylinder barrel. the only draw back is it only has the bead front sight. can you buy after market rifle/tactical sights for it? btw, i only paid $225 and it does not have a scratch on it. it is all parkerized with syn stock.

I looked into the sights, but found the 20" improved cylinder barrel with rifle sights to be cheaper than the sights alone.

Midway carries it here

I respect the Benelli M4

Gixerman1000: The Benelli M4 is sweet. I handled on at a shop: very cool. How's it shoot?

I love my M4, It’s smooth shooting with less felt recoil than any 12ga shotgun I have used to date, controllable, very rugged, feeds everything I have put through it from light shot to max DRAM buckshot loads with zero problems and can effortlessly cycle through 9 shells faster than I could ever pull the trigger.

I would have to go with the Mossberg 500. The Remington 870 would be my 2nd choice. Not positive, but to me it seems that the 500 has more cool tactical accessories you can buy.

Well, I have a Super Nova tactical and it very nice. Benelli mag. ext., Insight light mount, Streamlight TLR-1, TacStar shell holder, EOTech holo sights.

Tac Star makes really good quality extensions and other accessories for HD shotguns..........hpg

TacStar extensions are, in my experience, the worst wuality extension one can buy, next the ATI plastic thin. For quality parts, sick to quality vendors. Good extensions can be had from Remington, Vang Comp, and Tank'sRifle Shop. Wilson makes a quality +1, but I do not care for their +2 piece.

Other quality shotgun accessory manufacturers include Cavalry Arms, Mesa Tactical, Wilson Tactical, Speedfeed. As for price, you get exactly what you pay for.
