Tactical (extended) mag release on carry 1911?

Hello TFLers:

I am thinking of transistioning to a 1911 for carry. I love the feel of the grip in my hand and the trigger pull is great. What I don't like is the position of the mag release. I am currently carrying a SIG and I have no problem activating the mag release. What are the opinions of the forum members concerning the use of extended mag releases and carry? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Wilson, Brown, et al...

have drop-in TacMagRelease buttons that are ~0.060 inches longer...barely noticeable, and effective...I use them.:)

Extended mag releases, slide stops, thumb safties, etc. are fine for carry purposes (contrary to what some cantakerous types say) if they aren't TOO big & help you manipulate the controls better.

I don't use them myself, but as long as you go with the "tactical" (are we about done with that word yet? ;) ) style and not the gigantic oversized competition-style, then you shouldn't have a problem with mags popping loose when you don't want them to.

I use the Wilson tactical mag release and find it's very slightly longer than my stock release.I still have to shift grip a bit but it's not prone to accidental releases. You might want to consider an amibi-release.I've never tried one but pushing with my trigger finger seems to be easier.

The "tactical" mag catches are fine, but if an accidental release concerns you get a stronger spring from Wolff. I don't have a problem with the original mag catch, so I actually replaced the tactical release on my Kimber Pro Carry with a Colt unit.

Quick story to set up my reply.

The rear brakes on my Ford conversion van were not in time with the front, and we had gotten the first snow storm of the year. When I'd get to a stop-light, the rear wheels would continue to push while the fronts were locked. I stopped at a Holiday store, grabbed a screwdriver, crawled underneath, and began turning the brake adjustment ratchets on each wheel. Job was done.

Apparently, I had managed to push in the mag-release on my Kimber Eclipse when I was lying under the vehicle. I found this out when the magazine dropped to the floor inside the store.

The fear of someone seeing me pick it up wasn't as bad as them seeing me stick something in my pocket, thinking I was a shoplifter. Anyway, everything went good.

I will never have an extended mag-release on another carry gun. The ambi safety was also quickly changed. I am even searching for low profile G.I. style safety now, but can't find one in stainless. And the one Dane Burns sells for $100 seems steep.

Sorry the post was so long. Somtimes real life events convey more than the 'I believe' posts. But you will hear alot of 'I believes' from me also.

Take care

I did install a factory Colt thumb safety as well as mag catch in my Pro Carry for the same reason. You could always grind off the extra-long lever on the Kimber safety, but a standard Colt unit shouldn't be too hard to find. Failing that, a Wilson tactical (there's that word again!) thumb safety has a standard shelf plus extention, which can be trimmed down for carry.
