super 14 real stiff on breach opening..

HI Ya'll New guy here.. I Have a question.. Got a super 14 in 30-30.. And as you know you have to pull back on the trigger guard to open the breach, OK. Is it common for the T/Cs to be real stiff? I mean ya gotta pull back pretty hard for the breach to drop open.. Is it because the gun hasn't been used much.. I know T/Cs tolerances are real close and I'm thinking that maybe the gun will loosen up a bit as it is used.. Am I wrong about that? Other than that the gun functions great.. And accurate...Any answers will be appreciated

Super 14's

I have owned several contender frames and yes....they are stiff on opening but will ware fine as you use it in time. Have never owned a 30-30 but still have a .357 Max, and .357 H. The stiffness never bothered me any so long as
the lockdown was good.

mtnsmith;

There really isn't a "Big" problem, that is until you are unable to open one. You will notice that this will change from barrel to barrel and comon for the Contenders. The area is question,, is what I call the spring loaded locking wedge at the bottom of the barrel lug. Simply, it's not clearing the frame early enough. I actually had one that you practically had to beat to to open and then I had a buddy bring me one that was totally locked. If it does become a problem you can do the fix yourself or send it out to internet guys who work on these or just take it to your local friendly smith. Again, the barrel is the problem.

Great info Pahoo.. so Do I take a little off the barrel lug to relieve the stiffness when opening?

Thanks...............

I'd do that if I could be sure of putting it back on if that didn't do the trick. You know: file a little metal back on.

OK Standing Wolf I get your point.. What about stoning? I don't know just asking..Am I on the right track even?:confused:

Have you ever done one of these repairs? I would not have replied what I did, if I hadn't.

I have about a dozen barrels and two frames, one of the very early ones, and a mid production one, and some barrels are stiffer to open than others. As long as they open, who cares? If it bothers you, ..grow stronger!:D

Seriously, if it takes both hands and veins pop in your neck as beads of sweat break out on your brow, take it to a smith. Or send it to TC. Otherwise, don't worry about it.

Exactly!!! Use your middle finger to pull on the trigger guard as you'll have better leverage and will use a stronger finger.

The problem is probably the barrel locking lugs. If you want something to file on, that would be the parts to work on as they are replaceable. But if it's enough of a bother to you, just send it back to T/C and let them take care of the problem. It will cost you the shipping but they will fix it, most likely on their nickle.

There are actually 2 types of contender frame (3 if you count that ugly step sister the G2) the easy open and the pre easy open.If your pivot pin is at the front of the frame that means it's a pre frame and it will be stiff, especially if you have a newer barrel. TC will convert it for a big $55 bucks. I have one here on the desk that I need to send in.

I use two fingers

My habit is to use both my trigger finger and my middle finger together to open the Contender. Still stiff sometimes, but not unmanagable, for me. Might be different for you.

Just like holding on, for the Contender, my habit is to hold firmly enough that the gun doesn't get away from recoil. There's no "trying to get back on target for a second shot" to worry about. Although, with some calibers, holding it well enough to keep from getting wacked is a challenge all in its own!:D
