T/C G2 or Encore?

I'm looking into getting a 45-70 pistol.
Should I go with the G2 or the Encore?
The Encore can handle more powerful cartridges, not that I will ever need more then the 45-70, but it is heavier and a little longer.
I just can't make up my mind

I think you already have and the Encore is your logical choice. I own both and for smaller calibers, I prefer the Contenders and G2's. Keep in mind that you have more barrel choices with the Encore. As far as performance, both are fantastic. Hey, great choice. !! :)

The thing is, I don't think that I will ever want any more power than the 45-70. The G2 comes in all of my favorite calibers, 22lr, 357mag, 44mag and soon to be another favorite, the 45-70

What calibers do you have them in?
does the extra weight make a big difference in recoil?

The extra weight of an encore will help soak up a bit of recoil from a .45-70.

Before someone tells you that the trigger on their contender is much better than a trigger on an encore please let me clarify it:

Old contenders did have lighter and crisper triggers than Encores. If you are looking at used contenders then you may find a nice trigger pull on one of them. However, if you are buying new the G2 and the encore have essentially the same trigger pull and feel so there is not distinct advantage to buying a G2 over an encore.

down the road you can buy a set of rifle stocks for the encore and use it in and number of great cartridges like the .243, 7mm-08, .270, 30-06, and .308 that you can not get in a G2 contender.

To me the choice is easy, get an encore ( as a pistol frame ) and don't look back.

Hope this helps.

That does make sense.

And, if I'm reading it correctly, Buffalo Bores 45-70 loads are only to be used in Encores, not Contender or G2. I just sent a mail to Buffalo Bore to confirm this.

So very true and I love shooting my Contenders. I might add that you can get .22LR and .17 barrels for the Encore, although it might look a bit goofy. However, you can get a bunch of great rifle calibers like the 308 and 22-250 and 3006. You can also get the .44 mag and 45LC/410, in a pistol barrel, again, all for the Encore frame.
One of my Contenders with it's .22LR. Match barrel is a thing of beauty plus great fun to shoot. Personally, I prefer the Contenders to the new G2's, although the G2's have great features... Just me !!!

I had a Contender, and loved it, but had to sell it some years ago, to make ends meet.
But since then I purchased an Encore to replace it, and am quite satisfied, with the Encore. I do have the 15" ss 45/70 barrel, and since shooting it, I am glad for the extra weight.
Right now it's sitting in my safe with a full stock, and a .308 barrel, with Williams WGS pep sight on it.
Very versatile firearm.

Markalen, do you live in or around Orange County, California???
I would love to test shoot a encore in 45-70
Maybe I should make another post asking... begging... to test shoot one.

Old Contender for me

I have two frames, and barrels in .22LR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, 9mm, .357, .44mag, and .45 Colt /.410. Also 14" in .30-30 and .45-70.

The triggers are great, and they are fantasically accurate. The .45-70 is nothing to be approached lightly. Shooting BP level loads give stout recoil, and hotter loads are significantly worse. Even with the "mild" BP level loadings, (which I can fire one handed to prove the point), new shooters (to that level of recoil) can, and have wacked themselves in the face with the gun!

I would recommend Pachmyr grips, or composite wood/rubber grips, and a shooting glove if you plan on shooting more than a couple of rounds.

Don't try to manage the recoil, there's no point. Just hang on to the thing when it goes for a ride. For what its worth, muzzle flip from an unported 10" octagon .44 mag barrel is worse than from a ported 14" .45-70 firing BP level loads.

The Encore is probably at its best as a rifle, and handgun caliber barrels, while "available" are difficult to find.

I fired the Encore, chambered for the 375 JDJ, five times at a local gun show. The recoil was much less than I thought it would be.
Is the 45-70 much worse than the 375JDJ?
When I look a reloading data, 45-70 will send a 300g bullet at 500'/sec more then the 375JDJ, the 45-70 should produce more recoil then 375JDJ.

I will send a mail to T/C, asking them to bring a Encore and the G2 in 45-70... I just got to try it...
