Was offered a trade for a Thompson Contender Pistol with a 30/06 barrel. But cant' seem to find anywhere they even made a barrel in this calibre for the Contender. Anyone help whether they in fact did or didn't

thanks

T/c 30-06

T/C did not make .30-06 barrels for it's Contender - pressures are way too high. They do make .30-06 barrels for their Encore, the Contender's big brother.
To my knowledge, no after market manufacturer makes .30-06 chambered barrels for the Contender - it'd be a lawsuit waiting to happen,

KABOOM.....

It was never made to handle that pressure, and is an accident waiting to happen...

wait, strike that, it is no accident that someone made a contender barrel in .30-06. It is an act of sheer lunacy and you'll get a first hand experience with the inner workings of a contender pistol, as the parts come flying at you at several hundred feet per second...

don't get it, and don't be near it when someone else shoots it with normal factory pressure ammo.

I've seen alot of contender barrels rechambered into something they shouldn't be. If you reloaded and kept your loads down the '06 could be safe, but with reducing loads that far what's the point.

mikejonestkd has a very good point. Just because someone made a barrel for a T/C Contender doesn't necessarly make it ok to shoot it. I think some hot .44 mag loads or the .454 Casull were probably pushing the limits of this guns strength. Some cartridges such as .35 remington or .30-30 have alot lower pressures then the .44 mag and are relatively safe to shoot. I think people just assumed if it can hande some of these rifle cartridges then bigger ones such as .308 and .30-06 must be ok as well.

If you really want to try these then I would suggest a T/C Encore over the Contender.

Ok so they did make it but don't trade for it. Why would anyone make a barrel you cant reliably use. I have not seen the gun but the lady swears it is stamped T/C Contender 30-06. Oh well....... someone mentioned 25-06 this is safe right?

Sorry, The .25-06 is another of the many cartridges that you should never chamber a contender for.

A quick list of ones ( but by no means a complete list ) that you shouldn't have is:

Anything based on the .308 win case ( .243, .260 rem, 7mm-08, .308 win, .338 fed, .358 win )
Anything based on the .30-06 case ( 6mm-06, .25-06, 6.5-06, 270 win, .280 rem, .30-06 springfield, .33-06, .35 whelan)
Any belted magnum ( 7mm rem, .300 win, .338 win, .375 H&H, .458 Win, and weatherby mags) , and a whole bunch of non belted mags ( like the WSM, and rem short mags )
.454 casull, .500 S&w, .460 S&W, ..450 marlin, among others
Anything based on the 7 x 57 mauser ( 6mm rem, .257 roberts, 7mm x 57 mauser, 8mm mauser )

There are several companies out there that have made their own wildcats from some of the above cases but they are all handloaded to low pressures - the JDJ wildcats from SSK industries are a prime example.

I'm fairly certain that all of Jones' (SSK) wildcats that are based on the .308/.30-06/ etc. cases are meant for the Encore.
His Contender wildcats are based on .223/.225 Win/.30-30/.307 Win/.444 and some smaller pistol cases like the .30 Luger.

Pete, I do believe that you are correct, the -06 based JDJ's are encore only. Most of the contender wildcats are .225 based or cut down and necked .444 marlin. Thanks for the clarification.
