Synthetic Stock M1A and bipods

After a search here and some other spots, I'm debating a bipod for my synthetic stocked M1A. I'd like to play with it for medium range (@300yd) bench shooting, and perhaps hunting if I find an application for it. I can use an '07 sling reasonably well, and the 'rucksack' method has its place, but the bipod is something I'd like to test.

Harris, apparently, doesn't make an adapter, and I've read some negative comments on the effectiveness of milsurp M2s.

So, does anyone use bipods? Which make? How did you install it? I would prefer something that doesn't require creative fabrication.

Thanks :)

You raised a good point about the synthetic stock. First, you want to avoid placing the bipod on the barrel (or bayonet lug) since it will throw the barrel off. This leaves you with little choice but to mount it directly to the stock. Problem is that you don't want it to touch any of the internal metal (gas cyinder or op rod). About the best I can suggest is to acraglass a piece of metal which can be tapped for a swivel stud, to which a Harris bi-pod may be mounted. The difficultly is that there probably isn't much room to play with and you have to be very careful or slow with the chisel/dremel too. You also have to make sure that the metal doesn't contact the parts as mentioned above.

Thanks, Gary. Not the answer I was looking for, but...

I remember something about a manufacturer who made an adapter as a replacement for the gas cylinder plug...any ideas?
