synthetic stock for Win 670A

Want to restock an older Winchester 670A .30-06 with a synthetic stock. The birch stock has been cut off, a pad installed leaving it 1" short of standard length. Can't find but one brand of aftermarket synthetic stock for this model within my price range and don't like it. As an alternative, Winchester manufactured a synthetic stocked, blind magazine model 70 for Wal-Mart several years ago and still has spare stocks at their parts facility. These were black, injection molded stocks with a "W" on both sides of the receiver area. Has anyone used one of these "W" stocks to replace the old birch stock on a 670 and, if so, what modifications did you have to make, if any. Action screw holes are the same dimensions, but when I removed a friends "W" stock to try it out, the rear of my barreled action's metal magazine shroud (enclosing the spring and follower) wanted to bind very slightly and would not drop in well. Pushed the action forward very slightly and the blind magazine dropped right in, but then the rear tang would not fit properly. Suggestions from any who have taken this route or know of examples where it has been done?

What's your budget? I'd try and find an old Winchester Winlite stock by McMillan. The Winlite is a pretty decent stock and a lot better than the factory injection molded stocks from winchester.

Winchester Winlite

synthetic stock for Winchester 670A

Thanks for the suggestion. Didn't want to put over $150 in the stock. I will check both Winchester and McMillan for the Winlite stock you suggested, but given it is a McM made stock, my quess is it will be saltier than my max dollars.

The Winlite stocks use a floorplate. Would work, but would also require additional expense of buying bottom metal. I don't think you'll find one very cheap either.

The injection molded stocks work just fine. I own 3 guns with McMillans on them. They look nicer, are about 1/2 lb lighter, but not a bit more accurate than guns with the cheap stocks.

If you check the classifieds here and on other forums as well as e-bay you will find good prices on used take off stocks. People who upgrade to McMillan or other aftermarket stocks often sell their old ones cheap.

If you can live with the heavier laminated stocks I'm pretty sure Boyds makes a Winchester stock for a blind magazine for around $100

These guys sell some good stocks at good prices

You'll still need bottom metal, and this is the best source I've found for the money.

I just bought a used Winlite stock for my M670 and paid $225 shipped for it. You won't get the new one for less than $550 from McMillan. If you don't mind stainless steel, I have an old two piece trigger guard somewhere I could part with cheap might even still have a factory synthetic stock that goes with it. You can also purchase a one piece trigger guard for around $100 from Pacific Tool and Guage.

Haad the late editiion "Black Shadow" M70,

that used the composhite stock.

Could not get it to group in the black of a 100 yd sight-in target.

Best try Wenig's stock company for new wood.

CDNN had some bling mag synthetic factory Winchester stocks for $29.99 a while back. May want to check there.
