Swivels studs for Remington 870.

Greetings.

I know there are a whole lot of options available for a Rem. 870, but I'm looking for a cost-effective one. The 870 that I bought has a mag extension with a barrel clamp that looks like this one: http://img475.imageshack.us/img475/2121/barrelclampmine7ek.jpg

It has the empty hole at the bottom, same as this fellow: http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195804

However, I do not want to spend $21 on push-button swivels or an entirely new clamp. I would like to transform my clamp into something resembling the police version: http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1602/barrelclamppolice6cg.jpg

My question is, can I achieve the riveted/screwed stud (that Dfaris suggested in the other topic) by simply using a swivel stud screw and a nut? I'm basically looking for the cheapest option to get a stud in that hole. As with the other guy, however, the hole seems a little big (I'd measure it, but I'm hundreds of miles away on vacation at the moment  ).

All I've really been able to find are non-870-specific studs that I would hopefully be able to file down and screw in there, such as this one for $5: http://nas4.atlanta.gbhinc.com/GB/050835000/50835029/pix155244437.jpg

Do they sell just the stud that can be riveted on there to effectively make it the Police version? If not, are there any other solutions that are specifically made for studless remington clamps such as mine, or am I going to have to improvise? I'd prefer the swivel be on the bottom in that empty hole, but I'll settle for one on the side if the bottom one isn't a possibility. I thought maybe I could replace the clamp screw with a stud-screw and just have the swivel on the side of the clamp, but that seems like something even harder to find.

Thanks for any help. I've been blowing all my cash on 870 accessories and ammo and now I'm starting to feel the pinch. Thus my attempt to save as much $$$ as I can, starting now.:)

EO,

The stud on the Uncle Mike's copy of the Remington barrel clamp/sling swivel base drops through the hole from the top, and is secured by a C-clip outside the clamp. The stud on the Remington factory assembly on my 1989 vintage 870P is permanently affixed in its hole (it does rotate) and may well be riveted, I can't tell. I don't know why Remington doesn't go ahead and install the stud in the hole on that barrel clamp, I guess it's just one more cost-cutting corner they leave off. Any serious defensive shotgun needs a sling, and that's the logical place to put the front stud- too bad they don't install it at the factory.

The $5 option you have pictured will work, IF 1) the stud's threaded shank is cut down short enough to fit inside the clamp, 2) if the nut is big enough not to go through the hole- otherwise you'll need a washer to prevent that, and 3) if there's room for the nut to fit inside the clamp without hitting the magazine extension. Otherwise you might have to use a conventional hex nut. Either way, leaving it a bit loose on installation so it can rotate, and using thread locker to keep the nut in place, seem like good ideas to me. In this case the 'cheap fix' should work for you- I hope so anyway.

Here's another not too expensive option...look for one of these in your local gun shop or sporting goods establishment:

http://www.outdoorconnection.com/products/shooting_access/total_capr/totalcapr.htm

They can be found for about $10.00 where I live. After you get one home remove the stud from the cap by prying out the "c" clip with a small screwdriver and install it in your barrel clamp...perfect fit. It's the same exact stud that Remington installs on some HD models.

Now you also have a magazine cap if you ever want to go hunting without the magazine extension installed.

In my case, I already have a sling for my 1187 and borrowed the stud from it, so it actually cost me nothing extra to use it with my 870HD. :)
