Swivel studs for savage 64 f

I just picked up a savage 64F and was wondering if anyone has any experience in mounting a swivill. To it I know that I would have to drill into the stock and probably tap it but can anyone recommend a location to drill in and can anyone recommend what type of swivel stud and mounting hardware.
Also how do the synthetic stocks fare against cracking.(my main concern with mounting a stud in plastic that will have lateral forces applied)

This will be for a bipod mount btw, unless you think I would be better off mounting a rail to it to distribute pressure and give added Benoit of using Harris,s swilvil mount ( horizontal not side to side tilt style)

Even if it's not specific to savage just any comment on synthetics and DIY swivels will help

Well, in order to reply, we would have to know what this model looks like and I had to go out and get a picture. To date, I have never seen a rifle that could not be fitted with one of the Ucle-Mikes kits. Just have to find the one, that is applicable. Each kit comes with very good mounting directions. ... :)

The front stud is pretty much a no-brainer but the rear stud may be a challenge. Sythetic buttstocks are hollow and ribbed. Some give you access to the inside and some do not. On one sythetic that I did, I had to install a backing block inside the stock. Here is what I might suggest;

1) Get a chart or phone Unkle-Mikes and see which kit the recommend.
2) It's a current Savage and that is to your benefit. Contact them and get their input.

Some of us have been working long hours and haven't had a chance to reply.

In general, it's fairly easy to add sling swivel studs to a rifle. They're basically just screw-in affairs. However, a synthetic stock can create challenges that you might not normally consider. Take the butt plate off the rifle and look inside the butt of the rifle. Do you have enough material there to catch and hold the screw? If not, you'll need to add some material. Some of us have empoxied a piece of wood into the butt stock to provide material, others of us have built the area up with fiberglass.

Also how do the synthetic stocks fare against cracking.
That has never been a problem in my experience, but I haven't seen everything. Make sure that you've got enough material to accept the sling stud screw and you should be find. Calling Uncle Mike's wouldn't be a bad idea.

Thanks look like I'll be on the phone with savage and attempt to find more on this uncle mike brand.

Sorry if I came off rude or impatient.
Was just shocked that 100 people had no input to any aspect of mounting to synthetic I knew expecting specifics was a bit much.

Looks like I'll be calling uncle mikes

The butt isn't an issue as I am only mounting a front stud for now.
Seems there is a "cylinder " inside the stock that is under debate as to if for mounting or just an injection molding remnant.

I worked with plastic before and know it holds up will with inward and outward forces but tends to fail with parallel forces applied

The finer machine screw threads would be a better idea on plastic/composite. It will give the stud more grip and help keep it from ripping out of the stock.

If it's a thin fore-end, then you can always add a washer and a small nut on the inside, as long as it doesn't touch the barrel.

Time for second opinion from Savage !!!

If I were in your shoes, I would have to do some additional homework. The reason I say this is because Synthetics don't follow the general rules that apply to wood. ...
I do agree with agree with precision_shooter on having a mahine screw at the forend. Brownell is showing this kit as having two wood screws and perhaps I missed it but your model was not listed on their application chart. Do a search in Brownell and see what you find. ...

This may sound strange to you but normally the forend sees more stresses than the buttstock and the woodscrews don't hold up as well at this location.

Well I feel stupid didn't look to closely but apparently the new 64fs come with the studs . Old ones do not and site and diagrams make no mention of them..
I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up the gun today

Enlighten us !!!

apparently the new 64fs come with the studs
Well then, please educate us as to what you have. Describe both as well as you can and when you get a chance. Might help someone else that runs into as sythetic Savage/Stevens. ..... ;)
