Swivel Studs, 10/22 Synthetic Stock

Has anyone ever installed swivel studs on a Ruger 10/22 equipped with a synthetic stock?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Never did it, but you likely need inserts rather than the wood screw type of mount. If it is epoxy based, you can epoxy inserts in. If it is a thermoplastic, you can drill it slightly undersize and use a big soldering iron to press the inserts in. Possibly, you could get a wood screw in that way, too.

Call Uncle Mike's or one of the other makers and ask for advice based on the make of the stock. Calling the stock maker wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks, that sounds like the right approach. The stock appears to be hollow, as evidenced by the sound it makes upon tapping it. Also, the butt appears to be a glued-on cap.

my pc-9 has a simular stock. i called ruger and they said drill and install just like a wooden stock. i did use the barrel band style stud for the front stud so if your rifle has no band you may want to give ruger a call. hope this helps. jim y

Well, I just bought a PC-9 2 months ago and the synthetic stock is solid and came equipped with barrel band swivel stud up front and regular stud astern.

(BTW, the PC-9 is very impressive - equipped with low Ruger rings, 1" red dot, and sling, its awesome off-hand shooting machine.)

I am almost positive the 10/20 has a hollow stock - will take your advise and call Ruger and see what they say.

Good point about the barrel band - the 10/22 does indeed have one.

Called Ruger and they said they "...do not recommend..." swivel stud installation in the 10/22 synthetic stock because "...it may break".

I asked "Is that because the stock is hollow"? The response was yes.
