Swivel stud on HD Shotgun

I need to get a sling put on my shotgun in the near future. I already have an Uncle Mike's Super sling (quick detatch) that needs to be put to use but I'm not sure how to mount a stud on the front part of the gun. I have a Mossberg 500 w/ a 20in barrel. Mounting the rear stud won't be a problem but I need some ideas for the front stud... Thanks!

The Uncle Mike's quick-release swivel is simply attached to the Mossberg 500's OE magazine cap integral stud. If you have an older stud-less mag cap, then you have two options: the correct Uncle Mike's kit has a mag cap fitting that is attached to the modified existing cap with the screw provided. Or, you can get a new OE cap w/ stud. You didn't mention if you have a barrel extension, in which case you may wish to go the barrel clamp route.

Thanks Zippy, I do not have a barrel extension. The mag cap has no place to attach the sling. The mag cap is also held in place by some kind of nut that allows me to unscrew it, but I cannot actually remove it...

Sounds like the typical 500: the barrel is held on with a Takedown Screw - kind of a bolt with a knurled head, rather than a more common magazine cap. The Takedown Screw is held to the barrel by a Takedown Screw Retaining Ring. This is a stamped sheet steel "speed nut" that is castelated and grips the Takedown Screw like a son-of-a-gun. You can get this off by sticking a very small screwdriver into one of the grooves of the retaining ring and turn the screw to unscrew the ring. Four letter words may help . If you don't know enough four letter words a 'smith could probably get it off for a very small charge.

e-gunparts.com (for one) sells the retaining ring so if it got buggered up you could replace it. You can see a very small scale schematic there, too.

I was lucky - my Takedown Screw already had a tapped hole that takes the Uncle Mikes swivel stud. If yours doesn't already, you can buy a Takedown Screw with the stud on it.

Thanks Niner, I may not know enough four letter words but I'll give it a go. It might get to the point where it becomes personal (between myself and the screw) but at least I can say I tried :) I appreciate the helpful info!
