I've always considered the switch-to-slug drill along the same lines as the tactical reload. They sound great in theory, but are of dubious value for the street.
Does anyone know of a switch-to-slug drill being performed in a real gunfight?
Sometime past there was an incident where a cop performed a hostage rescue shot with a slug after a running gun battle. IIRC we discussed it in here. May not have been a switch in the heat of battle - the account was unclear.
Probably a good tool to have in the toolbox, but not at the exclusion of other skills..
One of the real difficulties with doing drills , changing ammo in mid stream, so to speak, is the lack of a magazine cut off in most shotguns. For me, it is easy to do that with my Browning A-5, but with most others, it is kind of a joke.
G3, oh, yeah, thought this was well-known in the gun culture. Guy wacked out on crack received a bunch of edgers with .38s. ESU guy center punches him with a deer slug after being loaded with buck.
Mannlicher, why on earf would lack of magazine switch be difficult? One less switch/lever on my weapon, the better.
KS,
The mag cut off blocks the magazine from feeding the next round, letting you easily change the load in the chamber, without unloading the entire magazine. It manipulates easily with just a finger tip. Works well for me, but then I have played with Browning A-5 shotguns for about 45 years.
