Sweet's 7.62?

Ok, I'm at the range, and they guy asked me what I used to clean Betty (my M1A). I said, you know, the usual, a bore snake to clean it out, then some Hoppes' #9, some CLP, the usual suspects.

And the guy shoves a bottle in my face, and basically called me everything short of a Taliban member for not using some Sweet's 7.62 on my M1A.

Err.. I don't even know what it is, is it a cleaner, conditioner, a love potion, what??

Someone enlighten me....

Thanx.

I don't know how old you are but do you remember naval jelly? It was a paste that you could put on steel to eat corrosion off? Thats what sweets smells like. It is for copper fouling inside of barrels. It is very stout stuff and will eat steel.

I would recommend against the use of Sweet's. It is very strong and if left in your barrel too long it will ruin it. Sweet's is meant for very dirty bores. I would recommend Butch's Bore Shine. It cleans very well and is made for target shooters. No risk of bore damage, either.

I'm 25. And I'm basically allergic to anything sweet, I don't eat anything who's primary ingredient is sugar.. So no, I don't know what it smells like..

But do I use it like copper-solve? And is it what I need to have a brand spanking shiny M1A?

No, you don't need it if you clean your rifle regularly, which you should anyway. If you clean regularly using Sweet's would be overkill. Besides, "squeaky clean" is for dishes, not guns.:)

Sweets is an ammonia copper solvent. I use it when I get a build up of copper fouling. It works great, just follow the directions and you will have no problems.

Sweet's 7.62 is GREAT for cleaning bad copper fouling. It WILL NOT "eat" your bore if you only let it sit for 10-15 minutes, like the label says.
It isn't necessary for routine bore cleaning, however, IMNSHO. Butch's Bore Shine is a better choice for regular bore cleaning after shooting less than say, 300 rounds, at any given session. Best.

You see, you need to use it on your M1A because it’s Sweet’s *7.62* and your rifle is chambered in *7.62*x51 NATO. ;)

You’d know it’s not a love potion if you ever took a whiff of it. WhooooooEEEE!!!! Strong stuff. Like bleach on steroids. Not at all pleasant like Hoppe’s #9 (I’d buy a cologne in #9 if they offered it).

I’ve used it on an old milsurp barrel that was black as a sewerpipe and it cleans like the dickens.

Semper fi,
Bruegger out.

Ditto, Sweet's only attacks copper fouling. But it will leave your bore unprotected against rusting, which it will do in short order if you leave it in too long. I only use Sweet's on bores with a lot of jacket material fouling. When I do, I set a timer for 15 minutes and then remove the Sweet's. If you use it on an M1A, make sure you get any Sweet's out of the action, chamber, gas piston and cylinder that may have seeped into it.

It's good stuff, but it's not a general purpose bore cleaner.
