SW99 - is slide usually this loose?

I just picked up a slightly used SW99 (S&W joint venture version of the Walther P99) 9mm for $425 delivered. I bought it via e-mail from a guy a few thousand miles away, so I didn't have a chance to examine it before making the deal and sending him the money (all through FFLs of course). It looks nice and appears to be in near-new condition as described.

My only concern is that the slide seems pretty loose on the frame (you can feel it rattle back and forth quite a bit if you shake the gun from side to side). Now, I don't supposed this will really affect accuracy or functioning (might even make it less likely to jam), but it is a little disconcerting to me. I've only handled new SW99s and P99s and I hadn't noticed this before (although I might have missed it). Is this normal for the SW99s? How about the P99s (I know there are some who disdain anything but the 100% Walther version)? Do they loosen up like this when they get a few hundred rounds through them (this one is supposed to have about 200)? Is there anything I can/should do to tighten up the slide to frame fit? I know that Walther makes the frame and S&W the slide, and I can't help but wonder if this isn't the reason for the looseness. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

My slide was a little loose before I sent it back. I had a problem with it shooting low at 20 yards by 3". I would suggest you shoot it and see if it is accurate. I sent mine in for repairs (all paid by S&W). Went out Thursday 4p.m. came back next Thursday 10 a.m..

They replaced the slide. I have only shot about 50 rounds but it seems better. The slide wasn't the best (it had surface rust dust) but it wipes off.

FYI-side to side motion of new slide is nonexistant. The up/down motion is viewable but slight.

Hey gunpowder,

I had the exact same problem and they gave me the exact same solution. I have to admit their c/s pleased me very much. My slide is tighter now and I am hitting the paper ok. Its still about 2 inches low with the lowest front sight. I think that is probably me though. I sent the gun out with no mag and when I got it back there was a brand new magazine in the gun. I was very happy. They also sent me 2 more front sights with an allen wrench. Maybe it was a mistake but I'm not complaining. Since I've put 300 more rounds through it I noticed it loosened up a little bit but accuracy hasn't been affected. I noticed the hole for the barrel on the slide was closer to the top of the slide. This must have been the problem.
Good luck Doug

I've got the Swalther in .40, and have not experienced anuy looseness or lockback probs after 1000 rounds.
I am confident enough that I carry it every day.
