SW99 9mm/.40

I am considering purchasing one of these pistols after a test-fire session with a rental gun a few weeks ago. The rental .40 was very accurate, never malfed, and recoil was very mild. I have read a few posts that stated that the SW99 slide sometimes locked back with rounds still in the magazine. Did this occur only during the break-in period? Did it only happen to the 9mm or was it experienced with both calibers? In this particular gun, which caliber was more accurate- 9mm or .40 ? Any other thoughts on the gun would be appreciated.

Mine was still doing it after 1000 rounds. Knew a few others who had the same problem just as long/longer. All 40s, early models.

Maybe a bug since worked out?

Have you heard of the same type of malfunction in the 9mm version?

Well, I have had mine for about 2 months now and 500 plus rounds not one single malfunction and very accurate, i was alittle better with the P229 in the .40 both are .40 but i think this maybe due to the sig being a little heavier and less recoil. i like the SW99 for its features and grip as well as being setup for additional add ons. i did want to get it in the 9mm only because I have tons of 9mm ammo. but will hope to just to live with the .40 ammos only slightly more expensive in bulk. i dont have a holster yet am will still keep on looking. if you like the style of the sw99 i dont think you can go wrong and some dealers here are selling them for about 550.00 new, good luck.

Mike, try the Kramer leather site for SW99 holsters. I highly recommend the MSP paddle.

It's good to hear that you haven't experienced the malfunctions I read about in earlier posts.

Does anyone know how responsive S&W is to warranty work?

CAK, S&W service is fantastic. I bought their 22A semi-auto awhile back. The first time I used it, the frame cracked! I sent it back to S&W. They made a new frame for me and reimbursed my shipping; turnaround time was about 7 days.

After a couple hundred more rounds, the "blue" (it was actually some sort of baked on black paint) started to come off of the barrel, a 7 inch target barrel. I called the service department again and they sent me a brand new 5" bull barrel and didn't ask for the target barrel back. Needless to say, I think their service is great.

Any 9mm SW99 owners out there? What are your experiences with the gun?

CAK,
I don't think S&W is selling the 9mm SW99s yet. They came out first with the .40S&W, but I think the 9mm is supposed to come out some time in early 2000.

I have the SW99 in .40 and have been very happy with accuracy. I had several rounds that didn't feed, but my father had loaded the mag at the shooting range, and maybe they weren't as good as I would have done it.

I'm very happy with the choice, and I got mine for $519 !!!

I don't know about the SW99 in 9mm, but I carried the Walther P99 in 9mm as my duty gun up in the Panhandle. Pistol functioned like a dream from the get-go. No malfunctions of any type in the 200 round break-in, nor during the two years on the street.

Hope that helps.

I have just purchased the SW99 9mm. I have run about 200 rounds through it without any problems at all. Very little recoil, comfortable, easy to break down/clean and its very accurate as well. No regrets here so far. In fact, I am very pleased with it. I originally planned to get the Walther P99 but went with SW99 because I liked the slide design better etc. Subtle differences.

I guess I am going to be the first to rain on the parade, but I had a SW99 a few months ago and couldn't wait to get rid of it.

I liked the idea, and I like the .40 *&* caliber. I didn't like the execution, and the customer care from *&* was horrible. I complained to them that the chamber was oversized, (I couldn't use the brass from this pistol in any other pistol, even after full length sizing). Basically, their comment was that they didn't care. (The post for this was made many months ago).

The gun worked fairly well, but I realized after I had it that I didn't really care for the feel of it.

CAK, My experience is just the opposite of Casey's. I purchased my SW99 40 cal. on an impulse. I had never handled or even so much as looked at one until the day I bought mine.
I stopped in at the local shop, just looking,
both the 9mm and 40 were in the case. When I asked to look at them the owner said I could have my choice for 20% off. I asked if he meant off retail or off his price, which was already discounted to $579. This was last April and he was getting rid of all his S&W inventory so he said off of his price. So for $464.00 plus tax I bought a top of the line plastic pistol. I have fired about 350 rounds through it, mostly reloads. It has not malfunctioned in any manner! At twenty five yards I can shoot a group of 3" or less. I am glad I bought the 40, because if I had bought the 9mm, I undoubtably would want some hi-cap mags but would have a very hard time justifying the $100.+ price. I'm sold on the SW99.

Bought my SW99-9 last winter. Worked fine but shot low and had a sloppy slide. I sent it back and got it back quickly. Their work is contracted out but the customer service guys were great. (they were probably laid off) It seems to work fine and the slide has a tight fit.

I wish I had a green Wather but I still like the gun. I Highly recommend the Alesis CQC holster. It is magnificant!
