My model 29 factory installed grip screw simply wont unscrew
it turns freely, but wont unscrew.
I want to install a recently purchased exotic wood hogue monogrip but these factory installed grips just cant be taken off because of this damned screw; can it be that sw just doesnt want these grips to be removed because it came in a presentation case and they feel it should be left the way it is??

Please advise

ps happy holidays to all and especially to you ex-coastguardsmen out there, from and ex-coastie.....................

The threads are stripped on the screw, or the nut, or both. One way is to turn the screw slowly, while prying the grips apart. To pry the grips, insert a knife, or box cutter blade in between the grips. Keep continued pressure, while turning screw. This is one of the time when it's nice to have 4 hands.

I'm thinking the 'captured' nut on the other grip may be spinning loosely in the hole, and pressure applied to it with a pair of precision needle nose pliars may be enough to allow the screw to be turned out. Another hand or two, or a vise may be needed to hold the gun when you try this.

Yeah.....more than likely it's the nut (called the escutcheon)
It's probably spinning in the wood on the off-side
Take a drop of super glue and with a toothpick apply a wee bit to the edge of the escutcheon where it contacts the wood. let it soak in and do it again. Do it about 3 times then walk away for 1 hour. Come back the the screw will probably work as it's supposed to.

It probably goes without saying, but be extremely careful NOT to get any glue near the screw threads.
