Does anyone know the real history behind this gun??

Mine has been a superb one. Still I do not know much of it´s history.

Any real facts??

Thanks you.

Made starting in 1988. A SS slide and alloy frame version of the 6904. Third generation 9mm compact with double column mags. It all started with the Model 59 in 1971.

Excellent

Never had a single problem with one. Accurate, reliable, and easy to maintain.

Just a couple of things to look out for. The alloy frame has a tendency to acquire ugly brown spots caused be pesperation. If you're not careful the guide rod can put out an eye. It takes practice to get into place without it flying out a couple of times. The mag finger rest extensions take away from concealability. Get some baseplated from a 5906 and throw away the ones with the pinky rest. :)

I wouldn't buy a new one because of the S&W/HUD agreement. If you can find a pre-sell out one get it. Prices are low because few people are buying them. Preban mags are pleantiful and cheap compared to brands like Glock.

I just bought a police trade-in 6906 a couple of days ago, took it to the range to day and all I can say is what a outstanding pistol. This is one accurate 9mm and totally reliable. Spare mags are going for $20 dollars around here. This one has found a permanent home.:D

The 6906 and the 3913 seem to gathered quite a cultish following over the years. I feel that those are the best semi-autos that S&W ever put out.

You have to start with the original DA 9mm produced by S&W: M39. This was a single stack gun which was inspired by the Walther P-38. While it discarded the Walther's locking block (adopted by Beretta) in favor of the more traditional modified Browning tilting barrel lock-up, it retained much of the Walther's safety features including a firing pin block and decocking safety.

The M39 was modified to accept a staggered magazine which was adopted from the Browing P-35. The new gun was the M-59 pistol, from whence the 6906 evolved (different materials, reengineered trigger for better pull, comestic differences which enhanced the ergonomics of the gun).

Class dismissed?
