SW 686 Range Report

I thought I posted this yesterday, but I probably hit the 'Zonk'!!! button instead of sumbit. My first time on the range with my new 686, 2 1/2".

Smith Wesson Model 686, .357Magnum/.38Spl. +p, 2 1/2" barrel, Eagle Heritage Smooth woods.

The SA was smooth and crisp, but at 25 yards I didn't shoot very well, not even with a bench rest. When I went to 15 yards, I lit up the scoreboard.

The DA was exceptional! The best I have ever experienced. A Keeper!:D :D

Nice grips Bullrock! I have the same 686 only with the rubber grips. It is a tack driver, and a dang nice double action trigger. I would not part with mine for most anything:D

I have a 686P 6" I use for hunting.

With the factory iron sights I hit nice tight groups at 25yrds. At 50yrds about 12"-15" groups with a few strays here and there.

When hunting I use an Aimpoint red dot. I got tired of taking off the spacer and re-calibrating the iron sights. I now just leave the Weaver spacer on and my groupings at 50yrds have greatly improved. I can take a better bead on the front sight with it on. I line up the bottom of the red front ramp sight with the top of the spacer bar. There is no windage adjustment but I seem to do alright without it. I just center the front sight with the spacer bar. It seems I can keep the barrel more level by making sure I can't see any of the top portion of the spacer bar. If I tilt the barrel too far forward then the front red sight begins to cut off. I wonder if they disigned it this way (gun and/or Weaver spacer) or if it was just a neat coincedence. Kinda wierd, but whatever works I guess.

I have owned 4 686s with barrel lengths of 2.5, 4 and 6 inches. All were/are very accurate revolvers. Keep practicing with that 2.5 - the accuracy can be very outstanding!

Nice revolver!!! You really like those Eagle grips don't you they seem to be on all your revolvers. ;) What kind of groups were you getting at 15yds?

Nice shooting Bullrock...Even though I like my 4" 686, plan to attend a local gun show tomorrow hoping to trade my .38sp M&P +cash for a 2 1/2" 686. The possibilities of carrying a snub-nose .357 raises some excitement.

The only competition shooting I have ever done is the old fast draw stuff. Not like todays Cowboy Comp. shooting. So at the sake of sounding stupid, I dont know what a group is!

For some reason I kept one of the targets. Maybe you can tell me?:D Oh! I don't see as well now, and my sights are blured some even with my glasses. As you can see, I have a tendancy to throw one every now and then.

I do like Eagle grips. The Heritage smooth wood runs about $70.00. The checkered grips are very similar to the original factory woods SW used to put on their revolvers.

I have a the same gun too, although mine is pre lock and has rubber grips. I will probably get wood ones in the future though.

When I first got that gun, I couldn't shoot it accurately to save my life. I didn't know if the gun was just poor or if it was me. In the end I just put it in the drawer for a while, and shot autos. I recently got it back out, and lo and behold, at 15 yards I put just about all of my shots in a card sized area. I guess a little practice was all I needed, as I now shoot that gun more accurately than about anything else.

Keep shooting that thing, and it will eventually show you what a group looks like. I sure didn't know before shooting it.
