The 649 is the "humpback" style known as the "bodyguard" modle .It is shown as the first in line in Ultramans ( as usual) fine photograph. As mentioned, the hammer is shrouded and JUSt protrudes out of the surface of the slotted hump. This makes it snag free but allows you the option to get your thumb on it for single action cocking or decocking. The 640 is shown second in line and is known as the Centenial style. It has a completely enclosed / hidden hammer that makes the gun double action only. Both allow for comfortable carry and snag free draws from pocket or holster . Both allow for fireing from inside the pocket if you had too. ( Something that #3 in line can give you trouble with) Volumes of arguments have been posted on both styles having advantages /disadvantages. Teh 49 gives you SA. Teh 640 gives eliminates the hammer slot so that there is less chance of getting anythig stuck in it. ( Of course, if you carry either in your pocket with paperclips and loose change, your asking for trouble anyway.)
FWIW, I own and alternately carry both but preffer the 49 style ( slightly) as it's SA function is a little more versitile for informal plinking on my woods walks where the 640 DAO action takes a little more practice if minute of beercan accuracy is needed.
