SVI Infinity .357SIG

Anyone have an Infinity in .357 SIG? I purchaed a fullsize with extended dust cover and 6 port hybrid barrel today, cleaned/lubed it and took it to the range. Most of the rounds wanted to nosedive into the feedramp and then occasionally one would chamber but the gun would not fire (couldn't pull the trigger). I'd drop the mag and there would be a round in the chamber so I would the manual eject it. It didn't seem to be out of battery but I just couldn't tell what was going on with this gun. I ended up firing about 10 rounds and had to give up.

I am only going to be using factory ammo. Does this present a problem with this particular gun and caliber? I though about ordering new followers and springs for the mags to see if that helped but was wondering if anyone had any info on the Infinity .357 sig and possible feeding problems.

I am using standard STI double stack mags. I am wondering if I should tell the dealer that I need SVI mags instead?? Or perhaps this is just a breakin issue??

I do have the option to return the gun however my other choice to exchange for would be a 10mm or a .45 caliber. Oh...I only use this gun at the range for fun, no competition.

Thanks for any info you might have.

Ahhh

The old double-stack, bottle-necked round, nose-dive jam. Never had a .357 sig, but one I tried a .400 corbon conversion in a G30, and had the same problem. Ended up selling the barrel. Seems that without a round directly underneath the one to be fed (as in a single-stack), there is extra room in the front portion of the mag, and for some reason the mag spring tension is greater in the rear (or at least not weighted more towards the front, but equally), and therefore as the rounds proceed upwards, they nosedive while in the mag and while being fed, causing them to jam low on the feed ramp or lower even. I had heard that this didn't happen with .357 sig, only with .400 corbon, though I never understood why that was - didn't make sense to me - same basic proportions, just a tad smaller overall. So I dunno what to tell you - I tried several things before selling the corbon bbl - stronger mag springs, different ammo, etc. - to no avail. Not sure why the gun won't fire if it's in battery, unless somehow the rounds are getting pushed in, in front of the extractor (but then it wouldn't go fully into battery; hmmmmm). Where's Walt - he has a lot of knowledge about necked rounds....
PS. Man those Infiniti's are pretty guns!

PPS

May a specially-designed follower with extra material in front to shift the whole stack's angle upward a tad at the front????

Well in talking to a couple of gunsmiths and receiving some email concerning the SVI in .357SIG I have decided to swap it out for a 9x21 which I am then going to convert to 9mm or .38 Super (although I already have 2 other SVIs in 38 Super).

Anyway, I want to stick with a round that I can just buy (factory ammo) rather than having to worry about the OAL, loading long, really WORKING at tuning the mags, etc. Since I have 3 total handguns in .38 Super I thought a 9mm would be nice (and factory ammo is cheap). Mags would be the same also.

Thanks for all the info.

i had the need for a cocked and locked 357 sig.it had to be an svi or a hk usp compact.it sounds like i bought the right one never a jam and shoots great.you could buy 3 hk usp compact for the price you paid.i do like the trigger better on my sig but with no grip saftey i only want it so light.i would tell them to fix it or keep it,thanks, keith

I only use my SVIs for fun at the range. I REALLY like the SVI hi capacity guns and my other 2 are 100%.

I'm sure SVI would fix it but as it turns out the gun (in that caliber) really is made for those that load their ammo to certain specs and I don't want to mess with that or with tuning the mags. My my dealer is going to let me choose another caliber and he would also refund my money but that's not what I want to do. I just love my SVI guns.

I do have HKs in .45 fullsize, .45 compact, 9mm fullsize, and 9mm compact (all stainless models, even the fullsize). I just have more fun at the range with the 1911 style handguns that are hi capacity. Of all my HKs, the one I will NEVER sell is my stainless .45 compact. In fact, I have two of them. With the exception of my fullsize 9mm HK, all my HKs have been 100% right out of the box.

Thanks for the input.

your welcome.i love the 357 sig i have 3 of them.i do load them a little warm depends on who's data you look at as to what is warm.that shoot great i did want a 1911 357 sig .well not really a 1911 just had to beable to go cocked and locked and as far as i could tell it's a svi or an hk uspc or a bhp but have to buy a barrel right off the bat with the bhp, thanks, keith
