survives .410 to the neck = bad defensive round?

I saw a report where a fellow, a "bad guy" in Iraq, was shot with a .50 BMG and survived. That doesn't mean that the caliber is not correct. Lucky day? Lucky guy? Good Karma?

There was a news story of a cheating husband whose wife let loose on his hindquarters with a Judge and birdshot. Didn't slow him down or seriously injure him.

Maybe the Judge is a plot by cheatin', lying, no good men to avoid get a 12 gauge in their tushy.

The owner of the weapon had an FOID card. There ya go ... if it had been an illegal firearm it would have been eleventy times more dangerous.

We don't know anything about the load or shot placement, so we can't draw any meaningful conclusion.

People have survived headshots from more serious calibers, or even worse situations such as with Phineus Gauge, so it's entirely possible the boyfriend was just lucky.

.410's were generally used as Riot guns in India and Egypt ... they were also used as very light field guns for birds. They were chosen as Riot guns for the express purpose of not killing people but rather to dissuade. I'd say the boyfriend was dissuaded ...

Tiki.

A report of "shot in the neck with a .410" means nothing other than a guy got shot. He could have taken the full charge, or only a single pellet and the report would still be "shot in the neck with a .410".

If this guy is doing ok, then I'd say most likely he only caught a pellet or two of birdshot.

with what we have, there's nothing substantial to discuss.

I'm guessing its because it patterns like a donut instead of a disc (has rifling right?) probably just got clipped by the edge of the ring at a fair distance.... now... I didn't read the link so sorry if I stand to be corrected.

"410's were generally used as Riot guns in India and Egypt "

They probably started more riots than they stopped. :)

Not enough information to say. I'd guess that shot size was probably a bigger problem than the type of shotgun used though.

If you google "Anthony Swinson" you'll come across a story of a man who was shot at point blank range with a .410 and survived when the shot failed to penetrate his skull (leading me to believe it was probably some type of birdshot). He managed to wrestle the gun away from his attacker.

There are a lot of reports out there of people being shot with larger caliber bullets and bigger shotguns.

I met a guy who survived a shot from a .45 caliber bullet. (You know, the one where just the shock-wave will kill you!) Larry Flint took a few shotgun blast to the stomach. During the 1968 Olympics (I believe) one of the terrorist took several 9mm rounds and kept coming.

The story does not relate the type of gun which fired the shot, the distance between the two, nor the shot size.

I think 44 AMP might have nailed it.

A single pellet in the neck and the guy is trumped in the media as getting shot,as in totally shot by the gun and doing o.k.

Media and the truth-lol.

Prosecutors said Podruzek retrieved a shotgun and opened fire after the victim shut her out of a bedroom. Afterward, she put the weapon in their garage and had a cigarette, prosecutors said, then returned to find the victim calling out, “I’m dying, I’m dying.”

It was a shotgun and he was shot through the door.

.410-gauge shotgun
“four or five entry and exit wounds” to the neck and shoulders
