SHTF, and you live where you are surrounded by woods, and the max shot will be about 200 yards, what would you carry for a rifle. I'm thinking either a short barreled .308(fal, M-1a bush rifle) or an ak variant(vepr II, SAR 1, Krebs AK-103)what would you carry.

My M1A is my do everything rifle. The big advantage in the enviroment you describe is the penetration of the .308, most trees are concealment not cover.

I'd be happy with an AK. I'd be able to carry more ammo than with a .308, and the 7.62x39 is prefectly adequate out to 300 yards. Also, the rifle is a little lighter and shorter than most .308 offerings...easier to tote and quicker to point and swing.

Hmmmm...I'm going to cheat a bit. I want an AR15 fitted with a .300 Whisper supressed upper to snipe at them until they get close. When they get closer, it is a simple matter to swap uppers to an M4 5.56 upper and give em hell! :D

My Mini 14. It's what I shoot well and ammo for it is everywhere, including in GI weapons and gear.

My SKS would work fairly well.

My M1 Carbine would probably work even better. I hope I like whatever they're carrying, 'cuz I ain't lugging more than 300 rounds of ammo...

In the bush with 200 and under shots I carry my Marlin 1894 Cowboy .41 Mag. Not traditional AO scout set up with red dot sight, Gr backups. This is so I can carry the same ammo for rifle and S&W mountain gun. If I was not a .41 mag shooter I would opt for the .44 mag.

Fast, accurate and powerful enough for anything I would need around here.

Cheers,

Anything less than 200 yards I would use a Polytech AKS 7.62x39. Over 4000 rounds fired and not a single failure of any kind. I have cleaned it once every 1000 rounds just as a test.

Ruger Mini 14. It is cheap, it combines the reliability of the M14 (M1A1) with the availablilty of the NATO .223 cartridge. Get the plastic stock stainless barrel in ranch rifle. That way you can peep sight it and/or scope it.

3 inch groups at 100 yards is good enough.

Why limit your options, own both an AKM and an M-1A then you have the best of both worlds. Those two are my favorites and if times got hard and I needed money, I would sell my car and ride my motorcycle, before I parted with my M-1A and my Polytech preban AK-47 Legend.
