SURVEY: Why do you like Guns?

I like guns because it makes me feel secure in that if I had to protect my family, my friends, or you, from harms way , I could! So what do you all think? I also like the recoil :D

Since this would be of interest to the general TFL population, I'll move it to the General Discussion forum....

Oddly enough I have an answer ready. Some girl asked me today in sculpture class why "men are fascinated with guns."

My first reply was that I'd like to meet these guys, because everyone I've met on campus has told me I'm crazy to allow a gun to exist in my house.

After that, I told her:
1. Machines are cool. The more elegantly they're engineered, the cooler they are. Guns are some of the best engineering going.

2. Stuff that makes you stronger, faster, or extends your reach is GOOD. Guns arguably can do at least two of those.

3. Being defenseless is often painful, humiliating, and/or fatal. I prefer being armed.

Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. I moved this thread, but it went into limbo. It may be because Gwinny posted at about the same time I was moving it. So, here we go again...

Defined precision limited by your own limitations.

'Sides, I really like the smell of an active range...."It smells like victory"

Because I am getting older, fatter and less able to beat the heck out of a young thug. My wife says she likes guns because I am getting older, fatter...

Seriously, the above is valid reasoning. There is no shame in desiring equality (or even superiority) when it comes to personal survival.

I love the physics involved with the engineering of a firearm. It's amazing how far guns have gone from its intial conception.

I also like the fact that I can utilize the life-saving capibility of guns.

Guns also bring sport. I love the thrill of a cold morning while tracking a deer. Then the bang of the rifle and the enjoyment of the catch. However, dragging the deer and gutting it is a different matter :)

Plus, I like the friendly, family atmosphere of my fellow gun owners.

"God made some men bigger, smarter, and more powerfull than others, Sam Colt equaled them all!" I know this is somebodies quote but I have no idea who, being of relatively small stature, it has been my motto since High-School, which got me into a little trouble

Happiness is a smoking gun and a dead criminal;)

DOCSpanky: Engraved on the sides of the late Texas Ranger "Lone Wolf" Gonzaulla's 1911s is the saying, "God created all men equal. Sam Colt made them all the same size." I don't know if that's original with him, but he's the only named reference I know of. Dates back before WW II. The pistols are in the Texas Ranger Museum at Waco, I believe.

As for why I like guns--well, lots of reasons. They can be looked upon as "useful sculpture" as well as weapons.

They are just plain fun. Shooting is fun. Hunting is fun, and provides tasty food for a natural-food freak.

And, of course, self defense. Without my life, I can't pursue happiness, and there ain't no liberty in a grave. I have a responsibility toward my family, for their safety--nobody else is legally obligated specifically to protect them as individuals.

Those without guns cannot fulfill their duty, obligations and responsibilities to their communities and families which they bear as adult citizens.

As usual, Art

Ahhhhhhh... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Many shapes, many sizes. Some with plastic, some with exotic woods. plus add the aroma of Hoppes No.#9 and other various aromatic lubricants.
I'm hooked for life :)

Happy Shooting :)

For the same reasons some like golf, and some like pool (billiards). It is a skill game that you can get into pretty cheaply, and before you know it you've spent tens of thousands of dollars. At the range, there are rich and poor, but they all have the same goal. I like the idea that a man can show up to a shotgun event like sporting clays with a single shot .410 that looks like it was used for a tomato stake, with the butstock held together with tape and super glue, yet shoot just as well as the guy with a 5,000.oo Beretta O/U. It seems like the crowd around a firing range is much more friendly and open minded than those at the golf course or pool-hall. I also really love the "BANG", and the recoil. The smell of burnt powder, and Hoppes is a stress reliever!

you know oddly enough i realy dont know the reason i like them but i have scince i was around 10 much to dissapointment of my parents who were mildly anti (well my mother atleast) up till my first gun at 11 there were none in my home nore was i ever around anyone who was a shooter or hunter but i always liked them even before i ever owned one ever scince the first i have not stoped owning or shooting ive had to sell some from time to time but always kept atleast one (the first i had) but now i own and buy because i enjoy the hobbie and am concerned over the ever eroding right to own and use them im sure there are other reasons but i just cant think of them

Guarantee these people have never tried the gun experience, or given any serious thought to self-defense issues. Sorry, but these days we generally get programmed by our televisions, that is just the way it works. Guns are bad. Fat is bad in your food. Idiots have no clue that even in a food with absolute zero fat, the carbohydrates is what will add to their body fat. But...... on TV they are programmed that no-fat foods are the solution to all your body fat problems, yes, vey good for you. You are getting sleepy....

THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST,INTREUGING THREADS I HAVE SEEN COME UP. When I look at a a fine gun I see hours and hours of thought that went into it to solve a problem that none ever would have known existed. The meshing of a dozen different events into one function . After you have been in this business you can see the mental approaches that certain nationalities use to solve these complex problems. It may sound like so much BS when I say that I can tell you a pistol I have never seen was made by a Frenchman or a German or an Englishman. You can actually see the thought process used in solving problems. An example is with a German gun where a force is required to move a mechanical part. An American would look at it and say that the easiest way to do it would place a toggle between point A and point B. A German would look at it and see that by connecting a toggal from a to c and another from C to B it would reduce the stress on point D and be more German. If you doubt what I say just look under the hood of a German Automobile. A gun is the accumulation of solved problems put together in all the grace and beauty of a piece of fine art. When an American designs a gun it is done with the idea of form follows function and If it can be blended with a touch of beauty that's a plus. I have a German engineer that has been working on our semi auto 50 for 7 years and has redesigned it a half dozen times. Where I would have spent my effort solving the problem with the original design his mind set is if there is a flaw in the design throw out the design and start over!

KawKLR, if I may be so bold; what the hell did your little rant mean? You quoted me and then went of on a TV/fatty foods rant. And just who were you refering to that has "never tried the gun experience, or given any serious thought to self-defense issues"?

(1) Family tradition.

(2) Family and personal security.

(3) Exercise of a civil right.

(4) Mechanical interest.

(5) Collecting interest.
