Surplus S&W Model 10

I just purchased a surplus model 10, with the skinny barrel and a lanyard ring.

Serial # is AFW7XXX.

Does anyone know when this was made, and what agency might have used it?
I haven't had the chance to fire it, but it's in mint mechanical condition, and the DA trigger is as smooth as glass.

I find that serial # range a bit difficult to date using the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson but I think your revolver was made around 1985. Unless it has a departmental stamp or marking somewhere I doubt you can tell who issued it. You might try getting it lettered by Roy Jinks (S&W historian, $30) but even then it might come back as being shipped to a distributor instead of an actual department. I do know that S&W made some for the Royal Hong Kong PD with a lanyard around 1983. Those ae marked on the back strap with RHKP. They also did some for the Customs and Excise Department in Hong Kong and I think those are marked C&E. If you open the cylinder and look at the area of the frame where the cylinder crane is attached you should see a 10-7, 10-8, etc. That might help a little in gathering some more info. HTH

Is there a different number on the backstrap also? I bought one of these last fall that had a C&E number relating to the Hong Kong Customs and Excise police. It's a great shooter.

Thanks for everyone's help. It's a 10-7 with the C&E stamp.

I'm looking forward to getting this one out to the range.
It just amazes me how this gun, having been introduced in 1899, is still in the S&W catalog, and is still an effective gun for what it was designed to do.

They must have gotten something right :)
