Surplus duty holster

Hey all,

I just got a surplus Hellweg holster off of eBay. Its in okay condition but could use a good cleaning. Any suggestions on what to use? How about shoe polish?

Also, I've never heard of Hellweg, and their website isn't really up to scratch, --are these good holsters?

If y'all are nice I'll post a before and after.

Thanks.

Hellweg is an Aussie gunleather company. You can read about the features of your holster at : http://www.hellweg.com.au/pages/holsters.html

For cleaning, shoe polish really won't work that well. It's not designed to be a cleaner. Use a hard bar glycerin soap. Work soap and a small amount of water into a lather, then apply to the surface of the leather, rub in and wipe off with a soft cloth. Work a small area at a time either across or down the holster and overlap the areas just slightly. Let the leather dry naturally before applying any wax or polishes.

Dry naturally means avoiding direct sunlight and exposure to heating elements, hair driers and the like.

Do not use oils such as Neats Foot or Mink oil, as they will saturate and soften the leather too much.

Holster leather is designed to be stiff to retain the moulded shape of the gun and maintain a good fit.

If the coloring is still good, all you need to use is Kiwi neutral paste wax or polish to protect it. If it's scuffed or faded, apply a proper color shoe polish lightly, just enough to blend in the faults. Let dry and buff with a soft cloth. Wait 24 hours, then apply the neutral wax to protect the finish and to prevent the shoe polish from rubbing off against clothing.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Bill, much appreciated.

From that site:

Spring steel reinforced, quick release thumbsnap addition to the Model 8A/8R range offers greater gun security. Double stitched welt improves strength and rigidity.

Fancy.

LSU -- from looking at their products, I'd say they were Bianchi's equivalent "down under". Very similar products.

Glenn, I did a search and you can find a few random holsters available, but it doesn't seem like you can order direct from the site. Brownells has a few items, including a belt, but aside from that there doesn't seem to be a lot out there. I found this on eBay, advertised as a duty holster bought from the Australian PD--after they went from revolvers to automatics--so you might want to try there.

Thanks LSU... I browsed the site... no contact info. I do want a couple of their shoulder holsters. I'll keep trying, and keep posting about my efforts.

Glenn; what type of gun are you looking to holster? Here is one on eBay: shoulder holster 9mm auto

I cleaned and polished the holster I bought and it looks pretty good now. I don't have much use for it ( I don't carry), but its nice to have a transport for the gun if i ever need it.
