Suppressor?

What's a good suppressor for an AR 15? I want a really good suppression, but I don't want it to be too long and look weird.

I would recommend you place this question in the “NAF guns and gear” in TFL.
You do understand that a silencer is a class 2 or 3 (don’t remember which) and controlled under the National firearms act and require a tax stamp like a sub machine gun. Buying one or making one without the due process = jail time.

It's not that suppressors themselves are "class 3" items (the class is a dealer licensing item, not attached to the devices themselves, although they are often referred to as such).

There's any number of decent suppressors out there. I have a YHM Phantom 5.56, which is economical but lacks a bit in performance... I probably should have spent the extra for a nicer one. One thing about suppressors- they're a pain in the butt to purchase thanks to the legal hoops, so do yourself a favor and buy quality from the get go. Gemtech, AAC, Surefire, many others make plenty competent ones.

The NFA section has more info, but keep in mind that TFL doesn't have a huge NFA community; the folks at AR15.com and some other larger boards can give you a larger sample size.

We cannot have them in NJ... no NFA so no suppressors, no SBR, etc.

Which is unfortunabte because I would save up all my money.

I aM NOT SURe if you can swap suppressors back and forht- I would LOVe to have my 3 .22LR rifles suppresed , I could swap if possible... would be ideal for protection of animals, having fun, looking and feelin amazing.

BUT ALSO---

I would save up say $5000-$7500 for a suppressed, top of the line, short barrel rifle, AR.

To have a highest quality AR/M4 .. (would this be Noveske, Daniel Defense? Bravo Company? Probably Noveske right>) AR, fully customed (I'm thinking Magpul ACS stock pinned fully closed, MOE+ grip, full flattop with full rail, MBUS Sights, fully covered with my multicam digital camo XTM panel colored covers, ..... with a Short barrel And a suppressor.... that would be a dream for me. THat's what I've always wanted. WHen I was real young and uninformed, t was a MP5 Suppressed but as i've gotten older, wiser, and more gun expierenced, it would be an AR cause 9mm aint got no power but .223 is much more better.

^ ^^

that is a photograph I snapped of a poster I got in one of my magpul componets.........people on GlockTalk seem to suggest its just an issue M4 with sme magpul pieces. I happen to think is beautiful...

But again- suppressor right? I would be ALL OVEE but no can d in NJ.

Yes you can. Depending on the model of suppressor, you can use quick detach mounts to make the swapping around easier. I have QD mounts on two ARs, and I can move the suppressor between them easily. My .22LR can isn't set up with a QD fitting, but still transfers relatively easily between the 3 guns I use it on.

Wouldn't cost near that much. If you can't put together a great AR for $1500 (before optics) you aren't even trying, and it isn't even hard to get that a lot closer to $1000 depending on options. SBR tax stamp would be another $200, the suppressor stamp $200, then the cost of the suppressor itself (most 5.56mm suppressors seem to run between $600 and $1000). If you go for a quality optic, you'd be talking maybe $3000-4000 all in. But as you note, you'd have to move to do it.

When funds permit I'll be getting a can...or two...

I have a lot of research to do, but from what information I've gleaned so far cans are not as caliber-specific as, say, a brake...

A lot of guys use the same can on their AR-15 in .223, and their tactical .308 rifles.

Here's a great forum for more specific info. For guys with some talent and a lathe- they can make an interesting DIY project.

I want a really good suppression, but I don't want it to be too long and look weird.

Short, thin sound suppressors don't seem to do the job a longer, larger can does.

I run my .308 M14 can on my AR and AK, it's big, heavy and it works great.
