suppressed pistol?

anyone have any thoughts on "silenced" pistols. I was reading an article in american handgunner and it mentioned a suppressed .45 contender. I can see the benefit of not disturbing the neighbors while target shooting, other than that what would be the use? Does it effect accuracy noticeably? I'd particuarly like to hear from anyone with personal experience. many years ago I had a chance to shoot a suppressed .22 rifle. If I remember correctly, accuracy was fine.

Considering that this website has a dedicated NFA section, there are a lot of us that are interested in suppressors.

I have a couple of suppressors with 2 more waiting on paperwork.

You noticed the first benefit already of a suppressor. Not disturbing the neighbors. They are good for that. More so if you are shooting on your own property with neighbors close by. Depending on the gun and suppressor you can shoot without having to wear hearing protection which is nice on occasion.
Another benefit that I use quite a bit is for starting out new shooters. I use a suppressed 22. Without the recoil and noise it is much easier to get someone started with good basics.

With a good suppressor you should not have any issues with accuracy. You might get a tiny bit of shift in where the rounds impact but the group sizes should not change.

Plus there is the fact that they are just fun.:D

Thanks for the input. I have a Ruger mk III .22lr that I believe would be a good candidate for a suppressor. As well as target shooting it is occasionally used for small pests. However as far as I know it is not legal here in N.Y. state to possess any suppressed firearm. If there are any stipulations in the law which allow their use I'd love to know. Thanks again!

As far as I know, NY like most states that make it a crime for a civilian to own a silencer makes exceptions for the police military and licensed dealers. Since I can not own one there, I do not care enough to learn more about the law there. :)

Yea, if you are in NY you are unfortunately SOL as far as owning a suppressor. I'm going to go get fingerprinted for my 3rd suppressor in just a few minutes.

In many parts of Europe suppressors are sold OTC and are in fact MANDATORY in someplace.

Fun fact: Car mufflers were invented when people started mounting modified Maxim suppressors onto the tailpipes of cars.

You get a fine if you don't have a muffler on your car, yet have to pay a $200 tax for a piece of safety equipment. Can you imagine if the Federal government had a $200 tax on hard hats and steel toed boots?

I purchased a TAC 65 for my Walther P22 about 2 mos ago. It only took about 45 days for the paperwork to clear. I set up a living trust for $50, but it cut the wait time on half. I like it, but had to go get some sniper subsonic ammo to hear the real benefits. If you shoot supersonic ammo, you are still going to get sonic cracks that are pretty loud.
