Suppose I am caught carrying a gun in Mexico

I run. I make it back across the border to avoid spending long years in jail for exercising my right to self defense and avoid being brutalized by the corrupt Mexican government and police.

Will the United States extradite me? Should they extradite me?

American citizens are sitting in Mexican jails right now for having found a few cartridges on or about their persons.

What's that old line about "how many feet per second can you run?". I doubt you could out-run the Federales...not to mention the US Border Patrol would probably prevent you from making it to US soil, and would assist in the arrest.

If you won't respect their laws then you have no foot to stand on in bitching about them not respecting our laws. If you don't want to walk around Mexico unarmed, don't go to Mexico.

You'd spend your remaining days rotting in a filthy Mexican prison in 120+ degree heat, suffering constant montezuma's revenge from the water.

If that didn't kill you, and you were not Mexican, the last thing you'd likely hear would be "pinche gringo" before being shivved someday.

And that'd be that.

what a laugh, they would bend over backwards to help the Mexican government persecute me for exercising my right to self defense in Mexico's sewer system of a country, but they aren't allowed to effectively stop Mexico's sewage from spilling over into our country.

Okay, let's drop the "if you are knowingly carrying a gun to protect yourself" linw. Suppose you find a couple of shells in the bottom of your duffel bag and get caught by the Mexican police. You manage to make a break for it and get back to U.S. soil.

This actually happened to me when I was on a cruise down at Cozamel down in the Yucatan about a year ago. We went ashore to go swimming in town, changed clothes and I found two silvertip .38 hollowpoints in the bottom of my bag from the range a few weeks earlier. My friend highly recommended I get rid of it before we went back to the ship. I concurred. I wrapped the rounds up in a napkin and dropped them in a trashcan as we toured the town.

I didn't get caught. But what if I had? Now of course unless I made my way as a fugitive inland all the way through Mexico up to the Rio Grande I would have nowhere to go to get away. But suppose I had been caught in Nuevo Laredo or some dirt hole Mexican border town along the Rio Grande and made my way back across the bridge.

I think you've seen too many movies. You'd be in a jail cell unless you had a sufficient bribe, or they'd simply shoot you if you tried to run.

I think you're failing to understand that Mexico is a third-world narco-state with corruption at every level. You do not have any magic protection shield because you're an American, there. You can and would be locked up, or killed. And nobody would care. Not anyone in their government, not anyone in our government.

Oh I know they are corrupt. No question there. I am saying if I get caught and make it back HERE to the United States.
If people can at times get away from the police here, why not from thug cops in Mexico? I'm not saying I'm going to try it or anyone else should try it. Likely you would be caught and/or gunned down

I suggest you look up what's happened to Dog the bounty hunter.

At approximately 6:00 am Hawaiian time on September 14, 2006, Duane Chapman, his son Leland and his associate Tim Chapman[4] were arrested by US Marshals at the request of the Mexican government, on charges of bounty hunting, which is illegal in Mexico. On June 18, 2003, the Chapman trio captured convicted fugitive rapist Andrew Luster (heir to Max Factor cosmetics) who was wanted on 87 counts of rape[5]. He had fled to Mexico. Duane, Leland and Tim have since been released on bail ($300,000 for Duane and $100,000 each for the other two).[6]

On February 16, 2007, the second district court in Guadalajara denied a request for an injunction preventing extradition. The court ruled that Duane, Leland, and Tim should face trial on one count of "deprivation of liberty" in violation of the country's anti-bounty-hunting statutes. The Chapmans are looking into their legal options to prevent this.[7]

Mexico is currently reviewing Dog's case to see if they do have grounds to extradite him on a misdemeanor.

Yikes. So Mexico can refuse to turn over serial killers, murderers, thieves from their own bretheren because they would be given the well earned death penalty here, but we have to turn over men who go to down there to hunt fugitives from here who commit the same crimes. And we have to turn over persecuted innocent citizens only trying to protect themselves.

And our "christian" president Jorge Dubya Bush says "Mexico is a friend"

I worked in Mexico and am familiar with how they work. First, don't put yourself in the position of breaking their gun laws. But if you do then the bribery path can work, but remember to keep it low keyed. If it gets to a loud political level then they might prosecute you just as an example. If you do it right you can pay off the necessary officials and you will be on your way. But do this early on not later.

Better still, look at a Mexican jail first and you won't even think about breaking the law.

You go to another country, you respect their laws... PERIOD. In most muslim countries, you can get the death sentence for having even a small amount of illegal drugs. This happened in Malaysia where some diplomats were executed, despite the strong warnings from their contries of origin. Your "God given rights" don't mean squat if the laws of the country you are in (even the good ole' US of A for that matter) prohibit it. If you don't like it, stay out of those countries.

Don't dream about trying to cross the border because you will most likely get shot from both sides.

Stay out of Mexico. Or any 3rd world county. There's nothing there, anyway.

Thats a real educated approach. Less developed contries are often great investment opportunities. When they become developing countries, you will already be established there. I have traveled to several less developed countries and have had no problems. Don't be conspicuous and don't bring lots of valuables.
