Support Kathy Harris

Florida Secretary of State Katharine Harris is also the Florida Co-Chairperson of the Bush for President campaign. While she seems to be doing an even handed job as the State's chief officer of elections, I think she should have either refused to take a high profile position in the Bush organization or recused herself from the whole voting resolution issue. You just KNOW that if things come out in Bush's favor she (and Governor Little Brother Jeb) will be accused of exerting undue influence. I am not suggesting improprieties, just pointing out that others might see it as an opportunity.

Sorry about the mis-send.David while I see your point about Mrs.Harris being a republican I do not see her being the one to recuse herself from this task. This is the primary job of this position in Florida that of over seeing elections. How is one not going to be democrat or republican and do this job?If she had been a demo would we require her to step out?If so then why give this job to anyone as everyone will either be demo or repub or independent etc etc etc...Steve

Come on, folks. Let's write Ms. Harris and let her know we're behind her. Hopefully she will call an end to this whole fiasco and certify the vote as official when the overseas absentee ballots come in. She's taking a lot of abuse right now. Let her know you support her.

Is it just me - or is Katherine Harris HOT?
I just heard on the radio some serious Harris bashing.
I can not believe just how low liberals are willing to go.
These people are truely sad, pathetic little people who dont even deserve simpathy for how mentally ill they are.

Sent mail moments ago! That woman makes me proud that she is not bending under the Gore pressure! :D

????? Who cares what *they* say? Go back and rehash the last week's history of who has said what in Florida. It's been a steady stream of contradiction, spin and just plain crap out of the Democrats. Since *they* are going to say whatever *they* please, let the lady do her job.

A lot of people care what *they* say. Governor Jeb took himself out of the process because his relationship with George might give critics an opening, justified or not. I still think it's a poor idea for the number one official in charge of elections to also be a campaign leader for EITHER party. There are plenty of people, some here on TFL, suggesting that Democrat election officials in Palm Beach County cannot be trusted to count the ballots honestly.

Unless you believe that absolutely all Democrats are liars and cheats 100% of the time, and all Republicans are honest and blameless 100% of the time, you will see that even though Ms. Harris may have done nothing wrong, that her co-chairmanship of the Bush campaign in Florida and her appearances on Bush's campaigning tours around the country offer critics an opening for accusations that distract everyone from getting the job done.

I could share a motel room once a week with a 19 year old swimsuit model, and spend that time discussing Egnlish Literature with her, but how many people would believe that I was not cheating on my wife? It is unwise to put yourself in a position that is open to serious misinterpretation.

I think that, back when she was first asked to be co-chair of the Bush campaign in Florida, she should have declined on he grounds that, as the state's chief supervisor of election procedure, she ought not to actively campaign for one candidate in an election which she would be supervising.

David-
Refuse to work for her candidate? What about her rights. If we were to ask every person in this nation to recuse themselves every time they had a personal interest or view, one way or another, the Court systems would come to a screeching halt (not a bad idea ;)).

The fact is she had the right to work for W and she had an obligation to step in and do her job when asked....much like Ken Starr. The courts will vindicate her actions in the end. The Spin and partisan vitriol may kill her off, however. So who should we really be pointing fingers at, second guessing and decrying? For me, the answer is simple. YMMV

Rich, I have no probem with her being a Republican. I know whoever is in that position is going to have an opinion one way or the other (unless, as i suggested, we start hiring P{rice Waterhouse to run our elections, which may have some merit).

All I'm saying, and I'll say it again, is that a person aware of the realities of politics should have recognized that in a disputed situation, her official position as co-chair of Bush's Florida organization would be open to misinterpretation. If she wants to do both roles, she will have to be ready to defend herself against accusations, unfounded though they may be. This will detract from the real issue, which is who got how many votes.

I seem to be repeating myself,so having said what I think I will let that stand. Nothing I've read here has changed my mind. If I see anything else here that needs a response, I'll respond.
