I am looking to shorten the barrel on my super redhawk .44, but an curious as to how the front sight BASE is attached, is it integral or soldered or? I know how to remove the blade, but not the base. I may actually snub it up to the front of the frame(like the new Alaskan), any sugestions on mounting a new front sight to the frame?

Why would you want to shorten the barrel? If it is too long for you, why not trade it for a different length revolver? I hate when folks come in and want me to exchange barrels on a revolver. It is so much easier to buy the other gun.
Also, do you know that there is an advantage for having the longer barrel when it comes to sighting the gun? I would leave the sight where it is and if you have to have a short barrel for whatever reason, trade the pistol in or buy another one. I am sure you could find a smith where you live that would gladly charge you for the work you want done, but you will be worse off than you are now.

Because it can be done. That and the shortest a super redhawk comes is 7.5". I plan on using it for carry out in the boonies and the smaller the better. I don't plan on shooting it at longer than 25 yards, or needing it beyond that range. I understand your fustration with people like me. I think we are just a little geographically differentiated in our views of what is our needs are.

To me, the 7 1/2 would be just right. I hunt with a super bleackhawk in 44 mag that sports a 10 1/2" barrel. I would go to a gun store and check to see if you can find a model 29 S&W with the short barrel or a Charter Arms bulldog. I think the bulldog comes with almost a snubnose configuration, something around a 4'' barrel would be best if you want a really short barrel. This will be a golly whopper to hold and shoot back to back if you ever run into trouble.
That's why I was so curious about the short barrels. They don't shoot as well in a hurry as the longer barreled revolvers do for me. To each his own as they say.
Some of the sights use a screw under the blade to hold them in place. Simply drive out the blade left to right and then remove the screws or screw.
I would let a smith mount it where you want it after that as he will have the drill bits and taps needed to reattatch it to the barrel. Good luck with the project.

What I am going for is a handier bear gun, and am thinking of "Alaskanizing" my SRH .44 mag to fill the bill like the SRH Alaskan in 454/480.
Kind of funny, but it is alot easier to find .44 mag ammo at a reasonable price than it it 454/480/etc, and, well, I like .44 mag more.
All this piece needs to do is stuff 6 rounds in anything big, hairy and upset coming my way, and is too close for me to get to my rifle or shotgun.

I went to an actual gunsmith for the first time and he has performed this mod several times, cutting the barrel off at the front of the fram, and milling in a dovetail for a new front sight. He is going to do the job for a quite reasonable fee. I'll post pics when I get it back, but the others he has done look beautiful.
