Super deal on Mossberg MVP Predator...This rifle could do anything! Scope and rings?

I came across an amazing deal on a Mossberg MVP Predator rifle. 18.5 inch fluted barrel, .223 & 5.56.

The rifle was on sale for $449 marked as a "clearance sale" and had an additional 20% off that price!!!

I ended up with the rifle and a $2.50 woodland camo hat out the door (Tax, $7 state fee, & the hat) for $399!

Now I need help deciding what scope and rings to put on it!

I'd like a 1-4x or 1-6x power 20mm type scope. But I'd also consider something like a 2-7 or similar. I might even consider a fixed power 3x, or not, :)... I'm not sure.

I've got a 1-4x Leopold Pig Plex scope that was only about $200 on my Mini 14 and I LOVE it, but the cross hairs are just a little thick and with it only having 4x I wonder if it would allow me to take full advantage of the MPV's apparent accuracy.

I'd also like to mount the scope as low as possible, but of course the bolt handle needs to clear the scope...

before I just start ordering stuff and hoping it works out, I thought I'd ask here first for advice and opinions. Or maybe someone could point me in the right direction if nothing else.

I don't have any specific use for the rifle. I bought it for fun. I've always wanted a .223 bolt gun. I cant imagine that I'd ever "need" to shoot it past 400 yards.

If you watch at about 1:50 the camera finally catches someone working the bolt, and the scope looks like a higher magnification scope with a larger bell on both ends, and it appears to be mounted pretty low. Yet the bolt handle clears...

Also, despite it being mounted low, you'll notice they have still added a cheek riser.

It would be a fun gun to shoot at longer ranges!

But when you get something with a 3x and up scope then you're kinda stuck shooting longer ranges.

I still like the idea of a 1- something X scope so that I could enjoy it like one could enjoy an iron sighted lever action rifle for quick and close shooting... but a higher powered scope to help wring out the accuracy is very appealing too.

I just don't know what to do :)

I'd say you stole that rifle, around here, an MVP fluted is bringing near 600 bucks, (well the're asking that anyhow).

Don't have an MVP, but have had a tidy Mini-Mauser in .223 for a number of years, and the first scope I put on it, a Leupold fixed 6x36, was a great optic, but lacked enough magnification to take on smaller targets much past 150 yds. Coyote, yes,..... chipmunk, ground squirrel, not so much. I went with a 3-9x next, same bell, and am happy with that combo. Coke can size targets are in danger well past 200 yds, and coyotes even further.

A 3-9x seems much more versatile, especially one with a small bell, so as not to clutter or burden the handy MVP. I would not go above 40mm bell.

None of the above applies if you see the rifle in some sort of SD role, for that a 1-4x would likely be fine, bigger targets, shorter ranges.

Congrats on a good buy on what should be a useful rifle.
 
Lots of good 3-9x40 scopes in the $100-200 range that will be suitable. I'm a "senior citizen" and have found that my accuracy potential is limited by lower X optics. Several on my AR carbines have 1-4 or 1.5-5 scopes which are perfect for 150-200 yards but just don't give me the definition for small targets beyond that.
 
Thanks for the posts guys. I appreciate the experienced opinions. I might need to get out and look through some scopes in person to see what I like for magnification range...

I feel like that could be a good compromise, because 3x still seems like a lot of magnification for close range shooting. Where 2x might be low enough for inside 25 yards which I think would be important for me regarding enjoyability due to the type of terrain I tend to shoot in (trees and mountains). However i'd still like to hold good tight groups at 100 yards, and it would be great if I could nail pop cans past 200 yards. 300 yard shots at pop cans would be even better, but is that getting too far for 7x?

I need more experience behind scoped rifles which is why I'm reaching out for help and opinions.

P.S. anyone know what the difference is between the "Duplex" and "Wide Duplex" reticle available on the Leupold?
 
My scopes have to have 1.5 or 2x as the lowest power. 3 is too much for some of my shooting. 7 or 8X is pretty widely available as the upper end on such variable scopes, and that is pretty reasonable also. I have not shot at chipmunks at those ranges from field positions though.
I think there are some 2 to 12 scopes though.
 
Primary Arms has a 1-4X optic for $129 and a 1-6X optic for $269 with a BDC reticle that get pretty good reviews. I plan on picking up the 1-6X .308 at some point

Well.

Now I'm considering the difference between a 2-7x and a 1-6x ...

Which one would be best on this rifle?

I made sure to look though a 3x scope today and I think a 3-9x would be just a bit too much for my idea. I'm thinking about this rifle as a capable short range repeater with good long range potential, simply because it would be fun and something different to shoot.
 
Im lookin very hard at the burris fullfield E1 with the new etched reticle. I like the 2-7x35. They are an awesome value and look very capable of 50 to 500yard shots.

I ended up buying the optic you suggested! I found one on eBay for even less then the one you posted. $152 and change for the E1 2-7x35.

I've been hearing great things about Burris lately and I like the reticle so I decided to go for it over the Leopold 2-7x33

I was considering this as well...

And it looks like a great optic... but I decided to spend a half as much and go with the Burris which I think will actually be a better match for the rifle and what I intend to do with it.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm happy with how this is progressing so far. Now I just need to find some good low rings.

It's pretty great to think that i'll only be about $575 into this rifle when it's all set up. I hope it works well:D
