"Super" 30-06

During a deep cleaning of my 30-06 my uncle and I discovered that there was the Word SUPER stamped on the underside of the barrel right before the front part of the stock, this was a while ago so i dont remember if it said just SUPER or SUPER 30-06. Anyone know what that means?? The rifle is a Winchester 30-06 pre 64 model 70 bolt action.

I think Super referred the model of the rifle at Winchester. Not the cartridge. It probably had a nicer grade of wood or other features that the standard rifle didn't have.

and Eghad that's what we think because while reloading shells to factory specs we discovered that the chamber of my rifle is shorter than a standard. (we discovered this when a shell got stuck, it was a big whoops!!! but we got it all fixed)

yeah

My thought too, a Super Grade.

Re a "shorter chamber." What I think you are describing is a headspace measurement.......which can and does vary from riflle to rifle. Unless factory ammo will NOT chamber in your Super Gade, the chamber is not "shorter".......just tight.
