Sunday's Silly Kahr Konundrum

Went to the range with Mylhouse this morning. All was going well with my K40, or so I thought. Loaded up some UMC 180gr. ball, the first of that bullet weight I've tried. Wouldn't chamber the first round out of the mag. NUTS!

Gun was quite dirty at this point, so I stripped it down and cleaned the barrel thoroughly. Still no dice. Myl says: is it the mag? Switched mags, still jams, gotta be the ammo. Whip out the Federal, known to be good in this gun. Still ZIP, out of all 4 mags. Now I suspect a burr in the chamber, on the breechface, or the extractor. Stripped again, and I SEE NOTHING.

At that point, Mylhouse realizes that I should put down the !@#$% K - N I N E, and try the .40 ammo in the .40 caliber gun. Gee whiz Batman, that's what the problem was? Say it with me now everyone,"DUHHHHH". :0:0:0 :)!

Both guns are matte black, with identical mags, which will hold and feed either caliber. Mylhouse graciously gave me the OPTION to be the first to post on my faus paux. The names in this story have NOT been changed to protect the innocent. :)

you are lucky. i had a friend that had both 12 ga. and 20 ga. shells in the same hunting coat pocket. he made a BIG mistake and loaded a 20 ga. mixed in with his 12 ga shells. while firing he pumped a shell in the chamber and pulled the trigger. the gun did not go off. he quickly chambered another round and fired. BOOOOMMM the barrel ruptured just behind the 20 ga shell stuck in the barrel. only the fact that he wears glasses saved his eyes. his face was not so lucky and he wears powder burns on it to this day. moral keep ammo seperate and pay attention.

Well, I waited and let Victor say his piece, so now it's my turn...man, if the country was still gun friendly and general audiences could stomach a barrage of emphatic f-bombs, then that scene was ripe for America's Funniest Home Videos!!! I could just see the smoke coming out of Victor's ears as he was trying furiously to figure out what the hell was going on with his Kahr! First came the disbelief. Then came the cursing. Then the worry. Then the frantic, on the fly cleaning (looking back, it did seem like he was struggling MIGHTILY to push that .40 cleaning patch through the 9MM barrel :) ). Next, he starts asking me questions about the cheapest way to send a handgun to the manufacturer. At this point, I think he was already trying to figure out how he was going to word the classified ad that would be put out Tuesday morning....
Then he tries again. Now to this point I was pretty absorbed in my own shooting, thinking to myself how glad I was that I didn't buy a Kahr. But now I'm running low on ammo, so I go searching for more. The two benches we were using were pretty littered with guns, mags, ammo boxes, and all kinds of other goodies. I go to move some pesky KAHR out of the way that's on top of the box of ammo that I need, while Vic is struggling with the other Kahr, contemplating a 15 yard HANDTHROWN group with it. That's funny, this pistol in the way has an awfully big bore to be a 9mm. The reaction Vic had when he realized his boner was priceless! Then the next round of colorful f-bombs!!! ;)

I haven't had so much fun shooting in a long time. Thanks Vic!

That .40 in a 9mm has some humor, but due to my own ability to get distarcted, I just don't shoot a .44mag and a .45 colt the same trip to the range. I don't think my Mountain Gun in .45 is up to handling a .44 mag load!!!

I too have been guilty of the .40 in a 9mm ammo confusion. I have also seen 9mm fired in a .40 on at least three occasions (two LE quals and one match)...didn't hurt the gun but sure sounded odd.

I have a similar case with my Glock 19 (9mm) and Glock 32 (.357/.40), although I have never mixed up ammo with them (yet).
I fixed this problem of not being sure which gun it is by filling in my .357 Glock lettering with white crayon. The gun now has white letters filled in on the side that say ".357" so I know immediatly when I pick it up that it is not my Glock 19.

Sorry I missed the shootout today, guys, but I did email you.

Im glad your alright.....when I was scrounging brass at a local gun store, (about when 40's first came out), I cant tell ya the number of ruptured 9mm cases i picked up, or excessively bulged at the base......seems a lot of folks,(store clerks included) seemed to think that 9mm would work in these 40 guns...amazingly there never was an injury that Im aware of...fubsy.
