Today I went shooting with VictorLouis (see Sunday's Silly Kahr Konundrum). I had a great time-I really think we should have a Phx gathering/shootout. I had never shot any of the guns that Vic brought, so I came away with some thoughts.
1) Kahr makes a damn fine pistol. Another shooter sharing the range with us had one and loved it and Vic let some other guy try out the Kahr and he was duly impressed. He said that the Kahr 9 would be his very next purchase. I just bought 2 maks-one for my wife and one for me for concealed carry, so I won't be in line for getting one any time soon. However, I found the gun to be very accurate and nice to shoot. The .40 Kahr was a little uncomfortable to shoot for pleasure, especially with the hot Corbon loads.
2) Light weight revolvers are not for me. He had a LW Smith snub nose .38 that he discreetly carries as backup. I have a scuffed up thumb knuckle that got jarred by the cylinder/crane release under recoil.
3) If I'm going to shoot a 1911, it has to be a full size steel frame version. He had a custom lightweight commander. Even though it was dead-on, I felt the trigger reach was uncomfortably too close. Recoil was much softer with the Ruger P97.
4) DAO pistols are not as hard to shoot accurately as one might think. All of Vic's guns were DAO (except for the 1911 type), and I had no problem shooting them nicely.
5) I think it's good to shoot with different people. I usually go shooting with one of two shooting buddies. I learned a few new things with Vic today that I wouldn't have known if I had gone with my usual "happy blaster" buddies.
Well, I know I didn't have a whole lot to offer with this post, but I wanted to share my experiences. I also wanted to say that shooting beats Spring Training baseball (Angels vs. Padres) any day.
