This post is inspired by the string addressed
below entitled The Most Discriminated Against
Minority in the USA; Its US Gun Owners.

Dennis says that we are one generation away from elimination of the gun culture in the usa.

That the goals of the anti gunners are
not so much to confiscate guns now but rather
to train our childern to grow up in gun free homes so that when they become adults they
will be used to gun free homes and there will be few gun owners left to confiscate guns from.

This means that when the confiscation does finally come, there will be so few of us gun owners that no one will care what is happening to us.

I see this as a valid concern which requires
action in the near future i.e. May 2001

As a solution to this problem , I offer this answer:

Certified NRA Rifle and Pistol Safety Instructors offer low cost courses to 14 to
24 year old students in the basics of rifle and pistol shooting.

The idea here is not to certify them; although this can be part of it in certain
states that allow younger shooters; but rather, to give them a introduction to the firearms community. In different words ,to get them shooting for the first time, to realize the fun of the shooting sports.

Heck, you can even use air guns or 22 long rifles.

Just cause my first gun was a 44 mag
does not mean.... Of course , after that ,all the others felt like pea shooters!

Introduction To The Firearms Community.

Sleepy Hallow Rod and Gun Club will be sponsering a free* introduction to the shooting sports on the first and third
Sundays of June ,July and Aug 2001 to
introduce the next generation of Americans to the shooting sports. Non shooters of all ages will qualify for safety training but we especally extend
this invataion to our young people between
the ages of 14 and 21.

Some restrictions apply. They are:

1. (free*)Participents will be required to pay for ammo they use but the firearms safety training and range time are free.

2. Those under 21 will need to bring written consent from their parents which we will keep on file. A phone number will be necessary so that we can chech validity of consent. Your parents are also invited and encouraged to accompany you and make a family day of it. Cook out facilities are
on site so bring your own food if you so desire.

3. Firearms will be provided by the club for
your training at no charge. You are responsible for any damage to provided firearms.
Call Milt at 1-395-78-9-64738971234 to enroll
and make arangements.

This is just a sample to get you started.
If you are not going to be issuing NRA Firearms Safety Certificates then you do not need nra certified instructors and can use a compentent shooter from your local club instead.

Remember, the main idea here is to insure the continuation of the fireaems community
and for this purpose all that we need to do is to get non shooters shooting for the first time.

You can do this --if you want to-- all it costs is the news paper add and getting your local shooting club's participation.

If they are so short sighted as to not see the need for something like this then you need to convince them otherwise.

This is a terrific idea. I see only two issues:

1) Newspapers will probably (based on previous actions) NOT allow your ad to be carried.

2) This camp would NOT take the place of a lifetime of hunting and range work with dad, or the comradship of the hunting camp, or the "quality time" spent teaching the children about the serious responsibility of gun ownership. THESE are the things that MAKE UP the "gun culture". They are the things many of US experienced as children.

The getting up before dawn, so the two (or more) of you can be "on-stand" by sunup, walking through the woods with frosty breath in the air. Taking your first deer or elk, tagging and field dressing it, and having dad help you get it to the truck. The pride you felt to be able to put meat on the table.

Or the hours spent in the duck blinds, and your dog taking off to get your bird. Perhaps it was the beautiful over-and-under shotgun your dad got you for your 16th birthday. Maybe it was the summer days spent with your friends in the field, armed with .22's, going after squirrels and tree stumps.

Or becoming a man without even realizing it.

The gun culture. Our heritage. May it rest in peace, and may God have mercy on our souls.

ernest, that's exactly what I'm at least going to try. I have signed up to take several NRA Instructor certifications and plan to offer *free lessons in an effort to do my part.

Its possible that nobody will respond but I'm going to try.

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

The NRA is our shield, the GOA will be our sword.

I've suggested this in other topics, but I also think it works well to invite young adults that you may meet through work, church, etc. to go to the range or out plinking with you. Yong adults like to think of themselves as being open-minded and are usually open to trying something new. Once they find out that it's more fun than a video game, you may have them hooked! Just be sure to act responsibly, emphasize safety procedures and if you are plinking, clean up after yourselves. Besides, if they're over 18, they can vote! (I've only done this 4 times myself, but in each case, they became gun owners themselves!)

Great idea! :)

You might want to have a lawyer look over your 'permission slips' to make the gun club as sue-proof as possible. Just a thought.

When I was in school, in junior high, we had an indoor shooting range underneith the auditorium. Students could sign up for an advanced PE class that included time with a .22 rifle on the range.

In High School, the advanced PE class did skeet shooting.

All that was in the '80s. Things sure are changing fast.

Last Sunday, I took two new shooters to the range to shoot pistols for their first time.
We spent 6 hours there, 5 hours shooting and one hour for a hot dog & hamberger cook out at the range.

We shot up all my ammo and ate up all my food and had a great time. I ended up certifing both for their State Premit to Carry, pistols and revolvers and I am doing it again with a group of 3 in the last week of Aug.
This gives me needed time to reload all
the empty brass from that last session.

Its way cheaper to use 22 lr but all I have is 9 mm and 357 handguns.

Ernest2...after the safety and handling drill, .22 for sight picture and indoctrination to real shooting. Then after less than a box of .22s, off to the world of .45 and .38/357. Costs more ammo but the grins make it worth it.
