Suggestions on what to get?

So I may be interested in picking up another rifle but have no clue what caliber or firearm to look at. I'm open to almost any suggestions that are under 500 new or used. I've owned shotguns for a while but just got into shooting rifles this summer so I'm fairly new to them. I'm interested in anything more powerful than a .22 lr but smaller than a .243. Bolt action or semi-automatic doesn't matter but I do want something that will have a decent amount of mods/upgrades for it in case I wanted to change it later on.

Thanks ahead of time

Need a little more info in order to provide any suggestions.
A gun is a tool therefore you need to select the right tool for the job.
You plan on punching holes in paper or hunting or both.

It will be for shooting targets.

Sorry that my budget isn't in your price range of guns. But since you don't have anything useful to add, I guess you won't be posting in here anymore?

Boy, I wouldn't ask this question in here. We all are so "opinionated" that you'll get 500 conflicting suggestions and be more confused then ever. Do your own research, decide what you can afford and like and check the online reviews on it. In here you'll also find who hates which rifle because they got a bad one so all of them must be bad or someone got one that didn't shoot so now none will shoot. I look at the reviews and especially the size of the five shot groups if they give them. I've found the Tikka T3 were the best, over some super expensive European rifles also. Then come back and tell us what you've chosen and we can pick your choice apart at that time!! :D:D

You pretty much described an AR, but you won't find one for $500. Lots of bolt actions available for that price, but you won't have many mods available. A Savage or Mossberg ATR in .223 is the closest I can think of.

Oops, just realized those both have blind mags, sorry. Try a search and you should be able to find some ideas.

You wanted something in .223, etc with a detachable magazine, that could be accessorized, for less than $500. Maybe you could find a Mini 14 at the pawn shop, I doubt it you though.

Here these are nice rifles, if you look around you might find one for less.
It has a detachable magazine, but about the only accessories you can add are a scope and a sling. Its definitely a good shooting rifle though, friend of mine has one with the mannlicher stock and its very accurate.

CZ 527 American Classic 223 $499.95

Something in .223/556 would be good. However good luck with the price you want to spend for the features you want. Maybe a use mini 14 for 500 like the other guy said.

For that price range ESP with a detachable magazine nothin comes to mind. You could get a new bolt gun and a cheap scope that come in a combo for less than $500. Savage an and the Remington 770 would fall there but nothing customizable or a detachable mag.

It sounds like you want a AR and the closest to your price range that u know of is a smith and Wesson m&p 15 "sport". You might be able to find it for 599-650 on sale. IMO, for what you want you might consider saving up a little while. With 800-1000 your options would greatly open up

Saiga... $300-$500. Detachable mags, tons of calibers. Good build quality for not a lot of dough. Lots of aftermarket stuff. Probably be as accurate or more then you. Will be more reliable then you as well.. :D

For punching paper, you don't need to put a ton of money into it (IMO).

In that price range I'd look at the Savage Axis line, they come with detachable box magazine although capacity will be limited to 4 rounds. MSRP on the Axis in .223 starts in the $350 range depending on which SKU you're after. If you can find a Mini-14 for $500 they're a lot of fun, you'll have to go used in order to find one at that price I think though. Probably more accessories for the Mini than the Savage Axis though.

I edited my post so now it doesn't say I have to have a detachable magazine. I didn't know that rifles with this would be more expensive. It's something I wanted but not a necessity. And thanks for the suggestions so far.
