Suggestions on rifle/scope combo

Need some advice. I'm looking for a bolt action in .308 with decent optics.
I know the first question is well what are you going to use it for. Answer, i don't hunt now but i suppose could be used for hunting in a survival scenario but more than likely will be a safe queen taken to the range where the maximum yardage is 200 yd. even though i would like to be able to reach out a lot farther if need be. I want something new (no milsurps as I already have most of those now). Here's the real kicker, I'm cheap and only want to spend $1000 so the delimma is finding the right gun to scope cost balance.
Any input is appreciated.

I think the below would end up less than $1000

Ruger M77 in .270 ---- wait until after hunting season - pick one up between January and April. (you're not sure what you're going to use if for - so why buy during premium season?)

Leupold VX II --- great glass

I would take a look at the Marlin XL 7. It runs about $350.00 new and has Marlins version of the accu trigger. That would leave plenty for a nice Leupold scope. Stay away from the scope combo guns most cases they put the cheapest scope available at the time on them.
Nothing wrong with the Axis. I own two of the Savage Stevens 200s, both are great shooters, I did need to work on the trigger pull on the one. The Savage Stevens line come threw kind of hit or miss on the trigger pull. And if you get it lightened up you void the warranty.

Tikka T3 + Nikon Buckmaster 4-14. - Shot a friends (but in 30-06). Accurate rifle. Great optices for the price.

I`m a Savage fan, but if you want to save a few buck you can get a Stevens model 200, which is built on a Savage action. As for scope I my openion the best all around scope, for the money, is the 3 x 9 Leupold VX ll With the 3.5 x 10 VXlll being alittle better. I do have a Stevens and actually like the stock that comes on them better than I like the stocks on the Savage 110`s.

$1000 is a nice budget, particularly if you're buying online and shipping to your FFL.

That could get you a Tikka T3 hunter, and just about any 3-9x Burris Fullfield II or E1, a Redfield Revolution, Leupold VX1, Nikon Buckmaster, Vortex Viper or on some clearance sites with good luck on a sale, perhaps even a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x or a Minox ZA3 at around the $300-$350 price point.

I like to spend about 30-50% of the rifle cost on the glass personally. Plenty advocate spending equal on both, but I don't see that being too much of an issue on a basic .308 bolt gun for hunting.

I'd go with a Savage mod. 16 weather warrior stainless with synthetic stock and a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x scope. Should leave you with enough $$ for a nice case or several boxes of ammo as well.

Based on what I have & really like

I would go for a T/C Venture (choose your favorite caliber) and a Minox ZA3 3x9x40.

The rifle sells for under $500 and the scope can be purchased for under $300 online from Camera Land in New York. The rifle comes with factory installed bases and you can choose whatever rings you prefer (Weaver style to match the bases). The leftover amount can be used for ammo.:D
