Suggestions for Precision Rifle Choice

I would like to solicit opinions on 1. Whether to go to Thunder Ranch's precision rifle course or the precision rifle course offered by Gunsite (I may make it to both, but need to pick one to go to first--I have been to both Thunder Ranch and Gunsite for other courses; I have taken Gunsite's General Rifle and TR's Urban Rifle II); and 2. What the ideal precision rifle/scope combo would be. Thanks for your thoughts.

Both have reputations as reputable, good training schools.

Why don't you just call each of them, and ask about what package seems to be most liked by their students, as far as scoring well? After all, they have monitored numerous students, with many different types of rifle/scope.

(Of course, I hope that some of our members have been there and done that and will comment.)

I attended the Thunder Ranch Precision Rifle 2 class last month. It was fantastic. I highly recommend it. Clint has revamped the PR classes so that they are now pure shooting. He said that he will likely run a PR3 class for those who are interested and include all the fieldcraft work there.

We shot mostly between 25 and 600 yds. with some limited work out to 1000. The main concentration was to get good hard dope on your rifle out to 600. We also worked stress drills (the Tower and Thunderville) and did a fair amount of moving target work. I learned a LOT!

I believe that PR1 will have you working paper out to 300 and steel out to 600.

I was very impressed with the Rem. 700 LTR. Out to 700 yds. they shot as well or better than the various 700 PSS, AWI and Robar customs that were being used. Due to high, erratic winds everyones accuracy started falling apart after 700 yds..

Whatever rifle and whatever school you choose, make sure that you get quality optics and that those optics are properly mounted on your rifle. I can't stress that enough. If your optics aren't up to the task you will be very disappointed. The Leupold Long Range Tactical scopes worked well but the best scope on the field was a Nightforce 3.5-15X50.

Feel free to email me if you would like to discuss this further or if you have any questions. Thunder Ranch is a top notch facility run and operated by top notch people!
