Suggestions for Flashlight under $40 for Christmas Present

I'm looking for help on finding a flashlight for my dad for Christmas. I want to try and keep it under $40 but get the best quality I can for that price. He's going to be working outdoors alot. Farmwork/firewood/etc. I would like one that he can clip to his belt or wear in a pouch. So can I get suggestions on the best quality, toughest, best price flashlight for under $40? I'm pretty flashlight illiterate so I'd really appreciate the help.
 
Personally owning 3 Surefire's, I'm definitely going to try and persuade you. It may be just a notch above what you were wanting to spend, but that one notch will definitely make a difference as well as stay there a long time.

I would get one of the newer G2's, the G2X. One of the models can be had for $55.
 
Thanks for the replies. I think I'm going with the surefire from cabela's. It doesn't have a clip it doesn't look like but seems like a good deal for the price.
 
With all the reliable and well-made LED tactical/non-tactical handheld flashlights nowadays, the Maglite is surely left in the dust. Flashlights that are 1/4 the size of the traditional Maglite are brighter and lighter, and all come with affordable price tags.

The only good thing about a Maglite is being able to use it as a weapon due to its weight.

Check our Surefire, Streamlight, and Fenix...they all have some nice lights at $50 price range.

Also, you might want to start handing out headlamps instead of handhelds. I can't tell you how much I love using them...being able to have both hands free while doing something is very efficient, as well as the fact that a lot of nice headlamps ($30-50) are pretty darn bright.

Just know you have a lot of options.
 
Get a Solarforce with a Cree LED. I can get those for like $33 with the one mode lamp. They are 10 times better than a piece of sh1t G2. I run 3 of them on ARs for weapon lights.... they are that good.

I WOULD NOT buy him a lite that takes CR123 batteries....$5 for an hour or so of light is not practical for a working light.
Cree LED that runs on AA's is the better choice.
Cabelas has one for about $24.
 
Eveready industrial or mining flashlight (I can't remember the model number.) 1W LED with a great reflector. Takes 2 D batteries which last for over a year of frequent intermittent use. Bright yellow or orange high-impact plastic housing so he can find it. Dustproof explosion-proof switch. About $25 at Grainger.

One problem I had with mine though, the light was flickering like it had a bad connection. I thought it was the switch or a cold solder joint in the lamp unit. Turned out it was just an invisible layer of corrosion on the battery terminals because the current is not high enough to burn thru. I cleaned the batteries with some 000 steel wool and it's working great again.

ill second the solarforce lights i have 5 of them plus 3 various surefires. and all so guys if you go to www.batteryjunction.com you can get there thermal protected cr123 batteries for a $1 apiece. ive been using for 2 years now in my various lights and my son uses them also for his AR weapons lights and have NEVER had and issue.they are way cheaper than shelling out the $$$ for genuine surefire batteries and last just as long.
 
For just a little bit more, I would go with a 4sevens Preon 2. If you want to keep it under 40 some of the Preon 1's can be had for less than 40 (prices according to color)

Whatever you choose, I suggest you make sure it takes standard batteries. That way you have rechargeables as an option, but more importantly, if you buy over the counter disposable, they aren't super expensive.
