Suggestions for a new long range shooter

Today, I purchased a Savage 10FP in 308. Unfortunately, I still have to wait the required 10 days here in California. As it comes in the box, there isn't a scope base nor rings.
I understand that your rifle is only as good as the glass that's on it, but being on a budget, I'm looking into a BSA Contender 6-24x40 until I can afford something better.
With that said, my goals are to eventually shoot past 500 meters and maybe on to 900 someday.
I was hoping to get some suggestions on what base and rings would be a good choice for this setup as well as any opinions. I'm also interested in whether or not a 20 MOA base would be helpful considering the Contender has a 35 MOA elevation adjustment.

Jess,You bought a great shooting rifle.
Too bad your going to slap some bottom end glass on it,but if that's all you can afford, maybe it'll work out for you.
Since your budget isn't where you'd like it to be,look at a Weaver 1pc extended tactical rail or the EGW brand. And yes,I'd go ahead and get a 20moa base.
I wouldn't spend a great sum on rings for the BSA either for now, just buy some quality rings.

Save up your spare cash, and get a quality scope for it,you will never regret it. Buy once-Cry once!:D

I did the same thing you're doing Jess. Matter of fact I still have a "cheap" Osprey rifle scope on my 700 5R/.308. It was on my 7mm rem mag sendero for a year or two before I transfered it. I do intend to upgrade this October to a Vortex or Nightforce simply because I WANT TO and not because the Osprey doesn't work. I haven't had a single problem with it. When I first started target shooting/reloading it made no sense for me to spend a large sum of money on something that I didn't know how to use. That was one of the reasons I went with the Osprey. Its been a really good learning tool for me. When I'm ready to upgrade I will place it back on my 7mm.

Thanks for the advice guys!
Just to clarify, I'm only buying the BSA because I want to shoot the same day that I pick up the rifle. I could wait a month and get something nicer, but I'm eager to see what this rifle is all about. Besides, once I get a better scope, I can just throw the BSA on a 22 and call it a day.
I'm sure I'll be posting again soon to inquire into vertical grip stocks and detachable box mags.
Thanks again!

bsa is better glass than folks give it credit for. It is only certain lines that have had problems. Skip the 20 moa mount for now, you won't need it untill you get out past 800yds, and then it is a maybe. If you want to shoot distance, some kind of training is a good thing. For solid training at a reasonable expense check out www.appleseedinfo.org to find an appleseed event near you.

go slow

My advice, passed on from another very experienced long range guy, is to go slow and try and avoid having to buy twice. Cheaper in the long run.

I think the Warne base is great, I'm running a 20 degree steel version on my F-T/R rifle, first class item. Rings.....I'm a fan of the Burris XTR rings. About $50.00, very massive and secure, have the tac look, and not overly expensive. Milled aluminum, which cuts down on weight, but due to thier mass, are still stout.

Optic, ............ah, there's the tough part. I shot a vintage K12 till I got the money for what I wanted. I only went to 600 with the k12 Practically speaking, 35MOA of adjustment (on your BSA) is not a whole lot. Most .308 rifles and loads will need about 35MOA to get to 1000. There's no promise that you will be at the bottom of your adjustments when you get zeroed either, so a 35MOA scope and level base may not get to 1000. (dialing in and holding "on").

I swore off Bushnells a long time ago, but about a year back, I bought a fixed 10x 3200 and put it on a .22. and have been very satisfied w/ that $200 dollar scope ...on a .22.

My advice would be to swing for the super sniper 10x at $300ish. Not great, but if/when you buy up, you will get $300 for it. Get steel pictinney ring and bases also like Warne, TPS, EGW, etc
