I've always been a Browning guy, particularly Hi-powers and 1911s. Now I gots a hankerin' for a wheelgun. I was thinking 1950s-70s vintage, maybe even WWII surplus, trying to stay under $400. US company preferable. Thanks for the help everyone!

My choices would be a early Smith M19 or M28 ,,,,357 with a 4"tube. They 28 is a heavier frame that will last a lifetime!

I would get one of those police trade-in S&W Model 10's (or M13, M15, M19, M65, M67, M66)

I got one of these M10's a while back, in good condition, for less than $150.

This M10 has some holster wear, but no rust. The gun locks-up tight, and it is accurate.

You should be able to find one for less than $200.

Jim March's excellent "Revolver Checklist" http://www.thefiringline.com/Misc/library/Revolver-check.html
will describe how to you can check to be sure that you get a good used (or new) revolver.

You could buy a used M10, a holster, some new grips, and plenty of .38 Special ammo, and stay within your budget.

If your smart you should buy Flushers mint agent, I would but I live in Ca. This gun weighs 14 oz and is very accurate and concealable. Shoot 158 LSWCHP ammo and be more effective than 9mm IMHO.;)

Strongly consider a 4" M19/66 S&W, either new or select police trade-in. I actually prefer the old Ruger Security Six series guns, but any of the two companies .357s are fine guns.

There is no reason your first such revolver should not be your last revolver. Looking back 40 years, a Model 19 would have very well seen me through college, the military, a career in law enforcement, and into retirement.

Just make sure that the secret doesn't get out. It could wreck a whole industry and cause twenty gun magazines to go under.

Ditto..

I would find it quite hard to argue with Dan’s suggestion...Particularly the "28"...

I would find it quite hard to argue with Frenchy's suggestion...Particularly the "28"...

It is very hard to find a better revolver than the S&Ws. The other one I suggest that you really look for would be a Ruger Security-six. Biggest mistake Ruger ever made IMHO was to discontinue the Security-six and Service-six.

Revolvers are great ... and .357 is a good starting point (as it will give you a great flexibility in cartridge selection ... 38 Spec., 38 Spec +Plus, 357 Mag, etc..)

For the money (and caliber), I'd go with a Smith & Wesson or Ruger ... depending upon what fits you best.

Good luck!

If you are looking in the 'previously owned and operated' market, Southern Ohio Gun has both S&W model 13's & 19's for under $240. Gotta figure in the transfer & shipping fees, of course, but you should still be able to get a good serviceable revolver in your hands for under $300.

They had some Ruger GP-100's a while back, but those are probably gone.

1) S&W 17 6.5" 22 lr
2) S&W 27 6.5" 357 mag

I would say find a pre 1960 mod 24 but that just my lust for 44 special talking.
