Suggestion for passing an afternoon in Phoenix

Any ideas or tips on passing an afternoon in Phoenix? My wife and I are going to be in Phoenix for a breif visit with relatives before driving to Nevada to bolster the sagging casinos ;(
Any safety tips or suggestions as far as spending a couple of hours? Also how is the drive from Phoenix to Laughlin? It's been a few years since I made that trip.
TIA.

You might like to come by our shops and get a tour . . If you would like give me a call at 480-585-7868 when you get in town and as for the road they are improving it so it is only terrible at the time. Really it isn't to bad most of the trip but has some bad spots where it is two lanes with lots of slow traffic

Haven't been there personally, but my dad said it was pretty cool when he went a few years back.

Oh, and if you see "A" mountain on the ASU campus (You'll know 'cuz there's a giant yellow, or whatever color they have it now, "A" poured into the side of the mountain) You can say that you met the guy who lit the "A" back in '95 ;)

Yeah, stop by Gale's.

Going NW from downtown Phoenix is Yuck! I go either west on I-10 a bit and then cut north, out around Luke AFB; or go north on I-17 toward Flag and then west on Arizona 74 to US 89/60.

The run from Kingman to Laughlin and then on to Vegas is getting more 4-lane all the time. The new freeway into Vegas from the east is great!

Gale,
Thanks for the invite! I can't think of a better way to fill a couple hours than to see where the Big 50's are born! The purpose behind our trip is to see my Dad. Since Dad is getting on in years, he turns 80 next Feb, and he has been getting kind of , well, weird since my Mom passed away, we aren't sure what to expect. The last time we visited, Dad ran off and hid in the kitchen until he felt comfortable having company. Since Mom was still around, we stayed and visited with her. If the same thing happens this time, we are going to be stuck with little to do until he gets over having us around. How far is your shop from Chandler? If I remember correct, the traffic into and out of Phoenix is pretty intense at times.

Hal, you might also consider visiting Marty Mandall's place:

Mr. Martin Mandall
Mandall Shooting Supplies, Inc.
3616 North Scottsdale Road
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
480/945-2553 http://www.mandallshooting.com/

He has a large variety of full auto weapons you can rent for use on their underground range. And, they have quite an interesting and broad inventory. Sometimes I just go in there after lunch to peruse. Marty is also fun to chew the fat with - quite a character. I get a kick out of him and always enjoy my visits.

Have fun in Phoenix. You're gonna love the weather this time of year.

Christopher and Jeff,
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep them in mind. I didn't expect a personal invite from Gale McMillan though. I mean to have THE Gale McMillan say I might want to stop by and see the shop! I mean, to me anyhow, that's like having Elmer Keith say something similar. I remember the first time I ran into Gale on-line in the rec.guns news group. He was telling of his experience in trying to reload or handload the .22lr. There are a few people that I trust without question in regards to what works, and what doesn't, based on their real life experience. Gale is one of them. I definatly put him up there with the real elite of shooting history! Might like to???!! Hell, I might like to win big in Nevada, but you can be sure I'll jump at the chance to meet Gale!

(Can you guess I'm getting pretty excited about this?) :)

Hal when you leave Phoenix on I- 10 going west to I-17 North take I17 to Deer Valley road and take the East exit down to 14 Av. South on 14 Av. two blocks south to 21421. Then when you leave you will be right on the way to Kingman. Let me know when you plan on being in the area so I can make sure I am here,

Gale,
Got it. Yahoo says 42 miles and about an hour from Chandler. Our tentative plans are pretty much just that, tentative plans. It all depends on how Dad is doing as far as when we can get away. I'm planning on leaving for Laughlin sometime early (Like around 3:00AM your time)so I will have to backtrack back to Chandler or Tempe. My brother and his family are in Tempe, so if things are pretty rough with Dad, we will visit bro.

When driving north near Kingman, be very careful of speed traps. Apparently, tourists and travellers are considered as fair game for revenue raising.
